Re: Wedding gifts that never made it out of the box...

  • We moved overseas a few years after the wedding, so because of the voltage difference, our electric kitchen appliances went back in a box. We assumed we'd move back eventually, but that didn't happen. Now we can't even donate those things, since no one here can use them.

  • I haven't had anything stay in the box, thankfully I use everything that I registered for! But, I definitely did not have a true idea of how I wanted to style my home when I registered for my wedding. I picked a lot of cute things that are very trendy and not necessarily my classic style. Most things I chose no longer go with what I want for my home so that is kind of a bummer! I would definitely suggest people register for neutral things that can change with your changing style!

  • Picture Frames!  We received SO many.  They were never opened/used.  We sold some on a craigslist type setting.

we purchased a house 9 months after our wedding and thankfully as I knew we would be moving soon we kept most of our gifts in boxes so we could open in the new place. Well the colors didn't work for a lot of the items in the new house, but since they were unopened BBB let me return (almost $1000 worth of dishes and other items) and then repurchase what I wanted! That was some fun shopping!!!

The color of the dishes don't work with your house?!

... I've can't even comprehend this. I have lavender and sage green dishes in a muted floral pattern (Christmas gift from my mother 10 years ago, and definitely NMS), but my Scandinavian minimalist living/dining room is deep turquoise. However, the dishes still seem to hold food just fine!

  • We registered for an under the cabinet wine rack without realizing we had no place for it in our current apartment...I saved it, but in the house we are building, they are installing under the cabinet lighting, so I'm not sure it will really work there either.

We registered for some things still in the box: Margarita pitcher and glasses (do plan to use it, but no place in kitchen to store it right now), fancy napkins and napkin rings (holding off for when we have a formal dining room in a few months), hmm..that's all I can think of.

We didn't register for candlesticks, but got one silver set and one crystal set. Needless to say, they are far too fancy for our apartment, but we'll have a spot for them in a few months when we move to a house.
  • Everything we registered for I love. (Except possibly my bedding set, which I do love but the quality was surprisingly sucky so we've already bought new.)

We did get (not per registry):

A figurine of a husband and wife angels. It kind of creeps me out.

An electric skillet that DH refuses to let me sell or donate because he is convinced we will love it if we use it. (It's been 4 years. Time to let the electric skillet dream go.)

A wine decanter. We don't drink wine.

A set of bumble bee fancy glasses and a big jug that goes with them. They are crystal (I think). I honestly don't know what these are for. They are cute but we've never used them.
