Is it too early for a Halloween costume discussion?

My little one just wants to be somebody with freckles....My big dd wants to be Abby Cadabby, which I would have to make.  I'm worried though that I'm going to start making it and then the kids at school are going to tell her that's a baby costume and then she won't want it.  Or is Sesame Street still ok in kindergarten?

Re: Is it too early for a Halloween costume discussion?

  • DD has been saying for the past year that she wants to be Ariel, but she did the same thing last year and changed her mind. So we'll see.

DD was strawberry shortcake when she was 3.  We drew freckles on her.

Merida has freckles, so does doc McStuffins.  And not that your dd would know her, but Punk Brewster had freckles.

  • I've started asking the kids, because it usually takes them a few weeks to settle on something and I want at least a month if I need to make one or both (gasp!) costumes.

I sort of want to steer H toward a Harry Potter costume, but we'll see what happens.

  • Liam seems pretty set on being Jake from Jake and the Neverland Pirates.

Jake wants to be (and I quote): the football robot.  You know, mommy....that little robot that jumps up and down and runs across the screen when the steelers play??

It took me a few minutes to interpret that one, but then I realized he was referring to that NFL computer animated robot thing that is on screen when games air on Fox.  ???

  • Dare I say I ordered Madi's this week? She wanted to be Elsa. I told her there will be lots this year but she didn't care. So I ordered instead of waiting a few weeks and can't find anywhere. Now if i can find a baby version of Anna for Julia. :)
  • Caron a baby Anna would be adorable!!  Smart thinking ordering it now while it was available!

  • Eleni found a Merida costume at costco and was content with that. As was I, because I didn't expect to have energy to make something more creative this year. It didn't come with a wig, though she never wore her Rapunzel one last year. So I am tempted to just skip the extra expense.
  • Forgot about Nolan..oops.  DH and I talked about making him a jack in the box costume.

Emmy this could be doable with a grey sweatsuit, a helmet, shoulder pads, spray paint and some yellow tape.  :)
  • my almost 5 year old made his costume decision months ago. he decided he is going to be a knight and the baby is going to be a dragon. i found both at costco so i jumped at getting them!
  • I love the football robot! What a great idea!

Some of our friends always have a great Halloween party, so I was just thinking about costumes this morning. I want to do something as a family, DS will be almost 1 at Halloween. I haven't had any ideas yet though. Last year I was pregnant, so I went as Padme from Star Wars when she is pregnant in episode 3. DH and my brother went as the Blues Brothers, which was my idea by the way, and they won best costume. The year before that we did Harry Potter (I was Bellatrix, DH was a death eater). Adding a baby is tricky!

2 years ago we did a Little Red Ridinghood Theme.  DD was LRRH; DS was the big bad wolf, I was the grandma and DH was the lumberjack.  It was so much fun to do the family theme.

Thanks for the ideas!  She was a cabbage patch doll last year, with freckles.  Apparently, the freckles had a lasting impact on her.

  • Ugh, my cousin is having his wedding reception on Halloween and it is a costume party. I hate Halloween. I mean its cute for kids but as an adult I do not want to get dressed up, my husband says we aren't going if costumes are required for entrance. It should be "interesting", they told my sister it would be too frightening for my niece to come (she will be 6 months), my dad just rolled his eyes.

  • I was going to say "yes".  (is it too early for Halloween?)  But apparently I'm the only one who hasn't thought about it!  HA!

this would make me roll my eyes too. But I would probably just OD the dark eye makeup, wear black, maybe some interesting fishnets (spiderweb?) and then clip a glittery spider in my hair. Kinda just go a little goth. Michaels had cute glittery spiders the other day when I was there. This is where my inspiration came from. Cause I kinda wanted one. then I wanted to tell EJ she shoudl be a witch for halloween.
  • I love the football robot!

I asked DD about this earlier this week (we saw Halloween stuff in the store). I fully expected Elsa as she has recently been bitten by the Frozen bug (she calls herself/tells us to call her Elsa, calls me Anna, DH Olaf, etc). To my surprise she said Doc. I'm kind of sort of thinking she is assuming she has to choose from costumes she already has. And mother of the year that I am, I'm in no hurry to correct that ;) So as of now, Doc McStuffins for the second time.
  • Dd wants to be Elsa. She usually decides pretty early and sticks with it. I think I going to have 3 Elsa costumes soon, ha!! I want to get it early since everyone is going to be Elsa! I finally was able to order the one I wanted from JCPenney a couple weeks ago. Ordered 2 sizes (unsure which size). Then it was back ordered and then the person I spoke to said it was not going to be shipped. So sad! Went to JCP in store on vacation this week and found one in a smaller size that might work, only to then have my original JCP order show up as shipped!! Craziness! But I guess I will have an array of sizes to choose from.

Dd's bday party was frozen and she dressed like Elsa so I already have some accesorries (homemade crown, snowflake clips and sparkly snowflakes for braid). I just found a jewelry set too.

So clearly not too early for me!! But with the frozen insanity I was NOT waiting!

Normally I wouldn't be thinking about it.   But, if I need to make an Abby Cadabby costume, I need to start planning.

Let me know if you have a 7/8 Elsa dress available at all (or possibly 5/6 but I think that will be too short).  I'm looking for my oldest as she has a 5/6 Anna and didn't get a chance to order the JCP ones.  Not too worried about it but just trying to plan ahead.

DD1 will probably be Ariel or maybe Merida (Costco).  DD2 wants to be "rella" so Cinderella it is...and I'm guessing they'll change their minds 10 times.

  • Not too early, DD wants to be Daniel Tiger and I already ordered tiger ears/tail on eBay from China and already received them.

We did Abby Cadabby before, made Pom poms out of yarn, daisy barrettes and light blue tutu from sydneysosweet.com, purple wings from the dollar store and a pink shirt.

I  THINK we've cleared out all of the sports equipment from our church sale, but I'll look tomorrow to see if there are any football pads still down there!  (Not sure if we had any to start with or not....)
  • S wants to be "Fire Dog" (aka Marshall, from Paw Patrol).  If I can find a Dalmatian costume cheap, I'll get it.  Otherwise I'll get some white sweats and iron/sew some spots on it.  And I told DH that he is responsible for eating at Firehouse Subs at least once between now and October.  That will get us the hat.  :-).

  • Any idea when once upon a child puts their costumes out? Logan still doesn't get it, so we just buy whatever we find is cute and cheap. Since baby 2 is due November 1st, I'm not sure how Halloween is even going to play out this year.

  • Just an FYI - anyone looking for Elsa - Target has plenty of Elsa dresses in the dress up area for $19.99. The one we got DD is 4-6x and it's roomy on her, but works (she's a 3T right now). They even have a super annoying, I mean awesome, one that lights up and sings 'Let It Go' if you're looking to make an impact ;)

OMG the singing one is so loud! I touched it not knowing it sang!

Another PSA about Elsa I went to another JCP and they had a bunch of Elsa and Annas, not a ton of size variety but I imagine they are going to have some stock. And a friend told me that party city has a lot of frozen accessories.

I was at my local one upon a child a week and a half ago and they had some costumes out.

  • @sarahandtim - what size is Logan wearing?  I can look through our costumes and let you know what we have if you want.

Works for me! He's between 18 and 24 months unless it's something with feet already attached. In that case we have to go to 2T.

  • Okay, I know we have a really cute cookie monster costume (which is also warm, so you don't have to worry about him getting cold if it's chilly) but I can't remember what size.  I will see what we have and let you know.
  • Dena---that would be great, thanks!!
