Best Name Changing Site?

Sooo many out there! Any good experiences? :)

Re: Best Name Changing Site?

  • None.

SS office, DMV & passport, banks, Facebook, and then change places as they come up.

    It's really not that hard.

  • I agree with the idea of just taking care of it yourself.  The name change sites charge you for forms that you can get for free on your own - and then you have to fill out & mail in the forms yourself.  So in the end, you're still doing the work to get your name changed.

Look online for name change checklists, to help you stay organized.

Certain organizations need to take priority over others - depending on your state, you may need to change your name with the SS office before the DMV - in mine, I was able to change it at the DMV first.  Check their website to see what forms of ID you need (most will need to see your marriage license, at minimum).  I know you can do things like the SS card over the mail, but it was easier for me to just get it done and over with in person.  Plus, my Drivers License was expiring, so I needed to go to the DMV anyway.

I took a personal day off of work, and hit the DMV, SS office, and bank.  Over the phone, or online I was able to change it with credit cards pretty easily without providing a copy of our license.  At work, they made me wait until my new SS card came in to change my name, and they changed it with my insurance and retirement accounts for me.  Other places (like the library), I did at my leisure, the next time I visited.

Some companies, I never actually changed my name.  Internet services - I eventually just changed services, so it didn't matter what my name was.  Apartment complex - they made me wait until I signed a new lease, but I moved out before then.

For things like bank/credit card/retirement accounts, in addition to changing your name, you might need to add your spouse as well.  So even if you pay for the forms to change your name (that you can do for free), they won't help with adding your spouse.
  • I don't think you should have to pay anyone or any website just to change your name.  I did it all myself and it took two days, one day mixed with physical visits and over the phone and the other day a visit.
