Babies- congestion and cough

Maybe you ladies can help me.... So Julia has had this cough/congestion for almost 6 weeks now. Her nose isn't stuffed but you can hear the congestion in her head. I have had her to the peds 3 times (one was her 4 month well visit). She isn't getting worse but it isn't getting a whole lot better either. They listen to her lungs and other than when there last friday are clear. He heard a slight wheez friday but said it was probably just viral. At her 4 month check a different ped (main doc we see) said her ear was starting an infection and being that she had been so congested for over 3 weeks at that point put her on amox for 10 days. Last friday he said ear was clear. So check that off the list. She does sneeze alot, so they thought maybe allergies. They even tested her for whooping cough just to be sure and came back negative. I tried steam showers to loosen it up. She doesn't have a fever, still her happy self. She sleeps all night. Wakes up coughing in the morning and all congested like she needs to clear her throat. I figure this is because she sleeps all night so that sits. The ped said they do not normally do any meds for allergies until 6 months... and I am not in a rush to medicate her. We just got a new AC/furnace in July. So it has the best air filter etc on it.DH does have horrible seasonal allergies that are kicking in pretty good for him also. DH can get some snot out of her with the boogie sucker we got from hospital. I haven't tried saliene drops for her nose. May try to pick up tomorrow. anyone have experience with or suggestions?

Thank you!

Re: Babies- congestion and cough

  • Do you run a humidifier in her room?  I love the Vicks (and generic brand) mix in for S.  Maybe, especially wit the new AC and Furnace, things are just too dry for her, and that's the way she responds?

My other thought is allergies.  I'm 90% sure S has them, too!  (DH suffers terribly!)
  • I was about to suggest a humidifier too.  Also, saline spray in the nose at least 2x/day.   She hated it at first but then started liking it for a short period of time.  We used to use saline, humidifier and a nose frida (one of those snot sucking things) and that got us through DD's first winter.
  • Sick babies are the most pathetic things ever!  Poor little girl! I would also suggest the humidifier over night, we have a Vicks one (the kind that makes steam not the cold misty ones).  And I have heard wonderful things about the nose frida things. It is gross and awesome all at once. I don't think it is SO unlikely for her to be sick for 6 weeks (it could very well be two different bugs back to back). But as an allergy mom, I know how snotty allergies can make a kid!  (EJ gives herself heartburn from sucking snot up her nose if she isn't medicated enough to prevent the snot and had vomited up nothing but mucus on more than one occasion).  IN any case, I hope she is feeling better soon.
  • Thanks ladies!
