Germany in December

Hello!

Hubby and I have planned a trip to Germany in December. We're flying into Frankfurt and going by train to Wurzberg, Rothenbug ob der Tauber, Nuremberg, Fussen and Munich. We'll have about a week and a half on the ground in Germany.

We already have all of our hotels booked, but would love any tips or advice about places to eat and must-see sights. Also, we're really excited about teh Christmas markets, anyone have any experiences to share?

TIA!  :)

Re: Germany in December

  • Have you gotten your train tickets yet? I think it is cheaper to get these in the US before getting there.
  • We haven't bought our train tickets yet. On past trips we have bought tickets ahead of time. For this trip, we've read that all but one of our train trips will be eligible for the special Bayern ticket. The Bayern ticket is I think 27 euro (2nd class) for two people and good all day on any regional train in Bavaria, no reservations needed. Usually I am a huge fan of buying tickets ahead of time. I love raileurope.com. When I priced out buying tickets ahead of time for this trip though, the Bayern tickets were much cheaper.
  • @DZKathryn - I took a river cruise last year and visited many of the markets, including a couple in Germany.  It was absolutely wonderful!  The sights, the smells....amazing.  We found it helpful to pack a soft, folded duffle bag in our suitcase.  Then we put all of stuff we bought at the markets in this and used it as a carry on back home on the plane so things wouldn't break.  Nuremberg was one of our stops, and that was definitely the biggest market.  Another tip, if you see something you like, buy it!  The next market you visit may not have it or you may not see anything and you don't want to regret not buying something earlier!
  • @JoanE2012 Thanks! I'm really excited about the markets. Good idea to bring an extra bag!
