WIJFR: Rites of Passage (NS)
Some authors I follow on Twitter were going on and on about this book, Rites of Passage by Joy N. Hensley, so I had to check it out. I basically read it in a day and ended up staying up way past my bedtime. It's about a girl, Sam, who comes from a military family. Her father is a pretty important military figure, and one of her brothers is a big wig at a military school. Sam's other older brother dares her to enroll as one of the first female students at that military academy, and she can never say no to a dare. She knows it's going to be a challenge and that she'll face plenty of obstacles, but she has no idea just now dangerous it will be.
I really liked this book. Sam finds herself the target of a secret society that hasn't been active for decades, which gave the story a feeling of mystery. I found myself turning page after page, eager to find out what was going to happen next. Sam was a strong character. She was determined, responsible, and handled herself much better than I would have in certain situations. There was a love interest, but I felt it played a much smaller role than I've been seeing in my more recent reads. In the beginning I wanted more, but I felt it was done right for the story that was told by the time I finished the book.
Definitely something I'd recommend.
