U-factor of a window

Hey all! What is ”U-factor” of a window? How do you judge on this U-factor while purchasing a new window?

U-factor is the rating given to energy efficient windows. It is the rate of transfer of heat. It measures the insulation value of the window. Always windows with low U-factor is always preferred, because they do not allow heat to transfer through them easily and hence keep the rooms cooler. A question might arise whether a lower U-factor will be suitable for houses in cold climate. But lower U-factor is preferable in any type of climate. A U-factor value of around 0.3 is always good. Vinyl clad doors have a very low U-factor http://www.windowchoice.ca/doors . They are suggested by experts for houses nowadays.
  • Admittedly, it is difficult for me to not nerd on this and start busting out proof equations.

The climate you live in would dictate the value of a more expensive, low U-factor window.

Hawaii?  It's worthless.  North Dakota...get the best you can afford.
