Kid's cups

When did you switch your kids from sippy to regular cups?  We still use primarily sippy cups at our house.  DD is perfectly capable of drinking out of a regular cup with minimal mess, but to date DS is like a sniper and knows when she sets it down so he can go in for the kill.  Which usually results in chaos.

Recently a good portion of our sippy cup valves were in a tragic and fatal garbage disposal accident, and it looks like they've updated the valve type on the cups and reviews say that the new ones don't fit the old cups.  So I'm looking to replace.  I'm contemplating going with regular cups, or maybe straw cups, but am I setting myself up for a mess?

DS will be 3 in November.

Re: Kid's cups

  • When my oldest was about 3 we started using these http://www.amazon.com/Spuds-S02304011-Open-Cup-Pink/dp/B008FOND84/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413298063&sr=8-1&keywords=spuds+cup
They don't hold a lot but the wide base really helps to keep the spills to a minimum.

Now that they are older we moved to these http://www.amazon.com/Silikids-Siliskin-Silicone-Sleeve-Months/dp/B00HVXKF4A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1413298161&sr=8-2&keywords=silikids
I love them!  It's a glass with a silicone sleeve.  They've fallen off the table several times and are still going strong.

I will say that the rule in our house is that open cups are for use at the kitchen table only.  If they are sitting on the couch having a snack, we use cups with a straw and a lid.  (My kids are 5 and almost 4).

  • We're out of sippys although we still have a ton of the caps.  I give Eamon straw cups or regular cups/water bottle types.  We've tended more toward regular cups (still the plastic vs glass) but spills are common place (they all take after me!).   Eamon is 3 +

I can't wait to rid my cupboards of all plastic cups!  Getting rid of the sippys has been so great - I never had this much room in my cupboard before!

If my kids are drinking milk, they have to sit at the table, no exceptions.  (because the thought of scrubbing dried old milk out of a carpet or couch makes me gag)  Jake drinks his milk out of an open cup, Liam still uses a sippy for milk.  They both use an open cup for water at the table.  If they are going to snack in the playroom or if they're watching a movie or something (and when we're traveling), I have one of these thermos bottles for each of them:

Jake uses that to take his drink in for his packed lunches at school, too.

We do the take n toss straw cups for anywhere and she's allowed to do the cup without the lid/straw at the table only.

ETA - I agree on the milk part - that is sitting at the table only!
  • Eleni has a camel back water bottle for water drinking, it gets used the most. Juice and milk she gets in a short cup or glass. but she drinks it down pretty quickly, and doesn't sip and set it down. Perhaps because we have predatory dogs always looking for a chance to swipe her snacks. I never considered how the twins may change our strategy. But she will be 8 before they will be a factor. So I doubt we will go back to sippies for her ever again.

I always liked the take and toss sippies because Mo steals them, and chews the spout apart. I never felt bad tossing them and buying more when they got too gross to use. Had I been buying fancier cups I would have been really angry at the little jerk :)
