FemCap, Spermicide, & UTIs

I just got married about 10 days ago. DH and I both waited until marriage to have sex, so we were really excited to delve into this new world together! It was amazing until a few days ago when I got a terrible UTI and had to stop.

I am medically unable to take BC Pills, plus I don't like the idea of doing anything that manipulates my hormones. So, I decided to try the FemCap cervical cap with Spermicide as my contraceptive (in addition to condoms). I believe the spermicide gave me the UTI, which I see is very common while researching it. So, now I'm re-thinking the FemCap. Has anyone else had bad reactions to Spermicide or is there a certain brand that you like better than others?

What other natural contraceptives have you tried and would recommend?

Non spermicide condoms is one suggestion.

A diaphragm is another.  Use it with a condom; you can make applying the condom as part of foreplay.

There is also Natural Family Planning. Women use it with great success and there's even a way to use NFP with an irregular cycle.

I do not like any type of BC that involves a spermicide. All I get is a yeast infection as a result.

Pee before and after sex; drink cranberry juice or take a cranberrry pill daily (it's also great for kidney health) --- 8 glasses of water a day helps, too.
  • Thanks! I practice NFP already. I have PCOS and I have found a lot of success with tracking my fertility. However, since I have extremely irregular cycles, it's really hard to predict my fertile days. So, that's why I want to be extra-cautious with contraception.
My DH is paranoid that we'll get pregnant with just condoms, which is why we were combining the FemCap- but I'm wondering if we'll be okay with just condoms.
  • I'd like to add - make sure you're going to the bathroom after sex. I know it's not the most fun thing when you might just want to cuddle, but it will help lower your chances of getting another UTI. I've only had one, and it was in college when I didn't want to walk down the hall to the bathroom after sex. DH and I learned our lesson after that.
