  • Is the flue open?

  • I was also going to say the flue.  (Flu? Flew? DH calls it a fluke.  I know that is not correct.  I tell him that often.)

Anywho...is it an ongoing problem?  Did you wait a bit (3-5 mins) to see if the problem goes away.   Sometimes I know it takes a minute to get the proper updraft and get everything going in the right direction.  We have set the smoke alarm off in my parent's basement more times that I can count.

If it is ongoing or doesn't correct, I would definitely call someone.  I have no idea who, though.  So sorry I'm not help in that dept.  In the mean time, you may want to make sure that you have a carbon monoxide detector in that same room to make sure you're not getting harmful gasses.
  • I think it is the seal around the fire place.  It is more the smell of smoke.
  • Ours smells smokey if we don't clean out the ashes often enough...but it is noticeable when we DON'T have a fire, more so than we do.  Maybe clean it out and see if that helps.

But, either way, it couldn't hurt to have it looked at.  You don't want to mess with fire/smoke, etc.!

    Good luck!

  • For a vendor recommendation, we used Al's Chimney Sweep (412-670-8475) for a cleaning and crown repair. When I complained about the smoky smell he told me that it was the same thing as Dena mentioned. Need to clean the ashes out. I am looking forward to the day I install a gas log insert of some sort. I love a fire, but not the smell! :)
