Re: book talk

  • Last book finished: We Were Liars--highly recommend it!!  It's a YA novel, moves very quickly, has a lot of twists that I didn't see coming.

Currently reading: Goldfinch--can't determine yet if I'd recommend it.  I just reached the halfway point and it's been a slow read for me, though it's picking up.  I had heard rave reviews about it, so maybe that's why I feel a bit let down that it just hasn't grabbed me yet.

Up Next: If I Stay by Gayle Foreman-another YA book, have heard great things about it (movie was out recently, I think)  anyone read it?

  • Last book finished: The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling). It was good. A little dark and twisty, but still a good read. They're no Harry potter, but she's still a solid author.

Currently reading: The Girl You Left Behind by JoJo Moyes. So far, so good! I've found her books a bit hit or miss, but I like it so far.

Up next: actually I'm not sure. I need to put more books from my "to read" list on hold at the library, so I suppose whatever comes in next. I do have a default book packed in my hospital bag just in case. I think it's a Mary Kay Andrews I picked up at the library book sale.

In other news, I had to give up Janet Evanovich and the Stephanie plum books. After 21 I realized they're all the exact same book and I wasn't enjoying them anymore. It's hard for me to give up on series!

  • I have If I Stay but haven't read it yet. I've heard good things about it but the subject matter makes me hesitate!

The last book I read was the sequel to Firefly Lane...fly away home. I really liked it, mug more than I expected. I didn't like the character Tully in the first book but really liked reading about her in this one.

I just started Diane chamberlain's The Silent Sister. I love a lot of her older books but haven't been thrilled with more recent ones. I hope I like this one.

I want to read the new Jodi Piccoult as well but much like Chamberlain I haven't loved a lot of her more recent books. I still have storyteller that I need to read of hers too.

I've been in such a reading slump this last year!

  • Sarah---it's always hard to let go!  I felt the same way when I finally stopped reading the "shopaholic" series.

I gave up on Janet Evanovich too Sarah! I think I got one from the library last year and it had been a while since I read so it wasn't bad. I think I may pick them up that way every few years. I think I was on #17!

Emmy I just saw something about a new shopaholic book and was horrified! The last one i read was so bad. I definitely will not be reading new one!

  • If I Stay (and its follow-up book) is a really quick read.  Very YA IMO but not a bad read for the commute.

Last book I read was The Rosie Project.  Pretty good.  Just downloaded a new one today - Lucky Us by Amy Bloom.  And I'm on hold for two books at the library - the new Paulo Coelho and The Paying Guests.

  • Emmy, I read the Goldfinch over the summer.  I agree that it was a slower read but I have to say that I enjoyed the story overall.  I ended up taking it back to the library late because I needed a few more days to finish it and I couldn't' renew it because people were waiting for it.
  • I just finished the marriage plot. that was really good.
and i'm reading now and the mountains echoed. i'm about half way through it and it is very good!
  • I'm reading "We Need to Talk about Kevin" right now.   I'm not too far in to it, but it's already a disturbing read.

Before this I read a couple of trashy mystery (with a bit of romance thrown in) books.  They're my favorite kind.
  • OMG, We Need to Talk About Kevin is so heavy. I recommend the film when you're done with the book.

The last book I read was Gone Girl, which I think most of you have read. If not, it's pretty good.

I'm reading Neil Gaiman's American Gods right now. I'd highly recommend it if you're into sci-fi or alternate reality. I'm really enjoying it.

I just finished The Kitchen House yesterday.  It was so good.  I would highly recommend.  I don't even remember what I read before that one...maybe the latest Nevada Barr, which was also very good.  I'm putting some of the ones you ladies listed above on my list for next reads.  I've been so much more into reading lately.  My TV watching has suffered greatly...which is probably a good thing.

  • Most of my reading has come from the Kindle freebie list - so not a ton to recommend ;)

I'm hoping to start We Were Liars soon. My friend asked me to start doing a quarterly book review for her online magazine and I'm going to start with this one.
  • I remember a bunch of you had mentioned Lisa Scottoline as someone you'd read in the past. BookBub is featuring something by her for .99 today if you're interested.

  • Oh, We Need to Talk About Kevin. That book blew my mind. I have heard that the movie isn't so great, which makes me sad.

Right now I'm reading the last book in The Amarnan Kings series by Max Overton, they're set in ancient Egypt. I really liked the first 4, but the last 2 have gotten a bit weird. I can't not read the last one though!

Up next is book 3 in The Selection series by Kiera Cass, YA dystopian romance FTW! Ha.
