WIJFR: Orphan Train (ns)

I had a few logic issues toward the beginning, (regarding Molly and what happened at the library), but otherwise I really enjoyed this. It's bittersweet...heavy on the bitter but with enough sweet to keep you from feeling depressed at the end.

I didn't see a thread for this one. Has anyone else read it?

  • No, but I've seen it around a lot. I hadn't read the blurb until just now and it sounds really good.

  • I just read it for my IRL bookclub.  I was disappointed with the ending.  I felt like the author got sick of writing it and just gave up and wrote a quick ending to get it over with.

  • I really enjoyed it though I wished there was more of the past and less of the present day.

  • @packfan20 I enjoyed the past entries the most, too.

@booneybear I want to ask what felt rushed to you, but it's a NS thread. Maybe once a few more people read, we can make a spoilery thread and hash out all the deets.

  • I read it. Overall I liked it. The past entries were my favorite as well and I did like the interaction between both of the main characters. I did feel like the ending was a tidy little bow and more rushed than the rest of the book. I liked the ending just wished it had more meat and depth to it.

  • It makes me want to read recorded accounts from actual train riders. Sadly, the horrible stories in OT didn't surprise me because my grandma has told me so many from her childhood growing up in a dirt-poor farming community. That was a shitty time to be a kid. Or an adult, for that matter.

  • I really liked this book.
I agree with most here, the past entries were the best.
the ending did feel a little thin/rushed/etc

  • I read it earlier this year for my IRL bookclub as well. It was pretty good, very sad though. And the fact that this was based on true events makes it even more sad for me.
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • I had many people recommend this to me.  I liked it, but I expected more of it.  I enjoyed the past portions more as well, but even those scenes left me wanting more sometimes.
