Something nice for the hubby after tragedy?

My husband and I have been married for just 3 months. Last week, his father passed away completely unexpectedly. This has of course been SO sad for both of us, but especially him. I feel like my judgment is being clouded by my grief, as I want to try to do something to try to lift up his spirits a little, but am at a loss for what to do. His father handled all of the finances, judgment calls and household details so we are planning to spend the weekends trying to help his mother to adjust to this huge learning curve until further notice, therefore a weekend getaway is out of the question for right now.

All I really know how to do is listen to him and be there for him when he cries, make him his favorite meals and support him with whatever he needs, but I feel like I want to do more for him as my heart is just broken. Can you think of anything else I could be doing to try to make his day a little brighter during this horrible time?

  • I would get a nice photograph of his dad --- or a family photo of him or his parents --  and frame it and give it to him.

Sorry to hear the sad news.My condolences.

Great idea.  I very sorry for your loss.  May you find comfort in each other.

Yeah, I would wait a while on this.  Seems a bit too soon, IMO.

Just be there for him and his mom.  If you want to do something, do something for her, that will likely mean a lot to him, and help take some of the weight off his shoulders.

  • I would talk to him and ask what he thinks could help. Guessing could backfire, since he may want to process the loss alone or a memento could bring on more feelings of loss. It could be that a few quiet nights on the sofa with a movie and a pizza could be what he needs/wants. Come up with a few ideas and ask him for feedback.

  • I agree with helping out his mom,. it will be a relief for him as well. I'm sure he feels like hes under alot of pressure now to take care of her.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

  • I am sorry for your loss. I think you are on the right track with what you are doing. Just continue to support him like you are and help out his mom.  It will take time, but, eventually it will get easier for your husband to live with.
