Thermostat Temperatures

Now that the temperatures are dropping the battle of all battles begins in my house...what temperature to set the thermostat? My SO insists on something usually around 74 degrees (Fahrenheit). He likes to be able to wear just a t-shirt inside . Growing up I was always told to put on a sweater if I was cold so I prefer something closer to 64.  We've tried compromising but he complains he's cold and I complain it's hot. We'll even change it when the other person isn't home, sleeping, distracted, etc. and see how long it takes the other to notice. Usually this is done in good humor but occasionally we do fight about it. What temperature do you set your thermostat at home? What kind of compromise did you make if you disagree?

HOLY SHIT.  How much do you pay for heat?!?!  I keep it at 64 during the day and 62 during the night.
  • We used to keep it at 70 when we were home at our apartment where we didn't have to pay for heat. At our own place we keep it at 67 when we're home and 64 when we go to bed. I'm always freezing but 74 seems way too high for indoor heating! Can't you compromise at like 68 or 70?
    Anniversary
  • I leave mine at a constant of 63 degrees.

74 degrees is way too warm,  If you are paying for oil or gas heat, your heating bills are going to be enormous.
  • I would die if the house was under 72.  But I have really low blood pressure.  So for me it is truly a physical response.  My extremities are always cold.

And I would kill my husband if he told me that I needed to wear a bulky sweater/sweatshirt and socks/slippers because he doesn't want to put on a tshirt (he is warmblooded).  And I sure as shit would not wear gloves so I could be comfortable in my own home.

I only have a thermostat in the bathroom, and I keep it just above 70°. I do not like to be cold when I'm naked. (It's underfloor electric heating cables, btw.)

In the rest of my flat, I don't have thermostats, because the heating is just electric registers under the windows. I don't even have them plugged in, because I never turn them on. If I could control it, I'd like to keep it at 65°-68°.

My SO likes it colder, so if we had more control over the temperature, we'd just compromise. Warm in the bathroom for me, cold in the rest of the rooms for him. I also have low blood pressure, but I usually dress warm for going outside, and I don't want to take too many layers off when I come in. If I'm lazing around in pajamas, I just grab a robe and/or blanket and wait for a cat to come sit on me.

  • 68 when we are home. 65 at night. H would have it at 75 if he could be I am not paying that bill.
  • I couldl't do 74. Way too hot. We're usually around 66 when we're up. 62 at night. DH and I both grew up in houses that were kept on the cooler side. I like bundling up (within reason). I have friends who keep their house COLD - as in they'll wear hats inside. I think that's insane. But right now I'm in yoga pants, socks and a sweatshirt and I'm comfortable. Plus, the cost issue- we couldn't afford to keep it in the 70s!!
  • We keep the house about 67-68 when we are home and put it all the way down to 58 while we are at work or sleeping. We have the programmable one so neither one of us usually touches it.

I can understand wanting to just wear a t-shirt inside because I will admit, I don't like bundling up but 74 is pretty warm and costly. I will wear a t-shirt and a cardigan over it if I'm cold or if we're just watching TV we have an electric blanket if we're cold.
  • My husband is super hot blooded and would keep the house in the 50s and walk around in shorts and T, I'm colder and like it around 66, at night and 70 during the day. Our compromise is 66 during the day and 63 at night, I just wear socks and a light sweater
  • We do 65 at night & while we are away, 68 while we are home. Our living room is on our second floor so with the heat raising, the rooms gets plenty warm. Plus the room where the thermostat is located, is kind of drafty so it goes on a fair amount. We've taken steps to help warm up the downstairs like by installing doors on the fireplace to keep the draft from the chimney coming in and this year we just had the outside of the chimney where the siding comes up to re-chalked. It helps some but what we really need to do is have the house insulated properly. I'm not sure if there is even any in some of the outside walls.

  • 72 while we're up and 70 while sleep.

  • 70 sounds nice and toasty as I get cold easier (my toes and fingers are icicles this time of year) but there is no way I want to PAY for that! We keep the house between 60-64 depending on if we are home or not. We have cats so I don't want to let it get too cold, and I heard it's most cost effective to stay within a 4 degree window or it will cost more to heat back up (although I have heard both arguments).

  • This thread cracks me up!!! I moved to a house in CT earlier this year and am getting used to "Thermostat control" for the first time ever.
In NYC, the steam heat is either all (like 85 degrees) or nothing (freeze your ass off!).  Now that we own a home and can control it, DH likes to keep the temp at 62. But I am usually super cold! I wear a nice thick robe pretty much at all times with some warm mocassin slippers. But my fingers get numb a little bit. So if it were up to me, I'd like it more at 65-68 degrees. Usually it just stays at 62 and I bundle up.

** I also am not used to paying for heat, so I am going to listen to DH and we can not go broke. lol
