We're on a christmas roll..can we talk kid-friendly movies?

So far, my kids have only watched the Christmas shows/specials (Prep & landing, Peanuts, etc)  I'm hoping to have a few Christmas movie nights, but I'm having a hard time remembering some from my youth (or more recent) that are age appropriate.  I have Home Alone on my list for sure, what else do your kids enjoy?  Has anyone watched "Prancer" recently?  I remember loving it as a kid, but I was a bit older...maybe 10?  Is it appropriate for the 3-6 year old crowd?

And have your kids watched Elf?  Brian is worried about them watching it (particularly Jake) since there are so many references to Santa not being real...thoughts?

  • I want to watch Home Alone with dd this year too!

I loved prancer but wasn't the girl initially really sad because her mom died? My kid is kind of used to parent deaths thanks to disney movies but those are usually cartoons! With our cat having just died I think we are going to avoid anything death related!

I really can't remember Elf...only watched it like once so I'm not sure.

What about the Santa Clause? I am thinking of watching that one with dd this year too.

  • Polar Express is a good one, too.

Both of my kids watch Elf and the business about not believing in Santa didn't ruin it.  Noah is a HUGE believer.   It's one of our favorites.

We just watched North Pole on Sunday.  It's one of the Hallmark channel movies that's new this year and it was very cute.

My mother used to have them over to watch Jingle All the Way.
  • My kids really like Prancer and I think Jake is definitely old enough to enjoy it! They also like the Ice Age Mammoth Christmas (it's only about 1/2 hour long). There is also a Toy Story Christmas special on TV on Dec. 2.

  • Amber-I'm glad you mentioned NorthPole, it was on my list to watch so I'm happy to hear I can turn it into a family movie :)

Great suggestions, I forgot about Jingle All the Way and some of the others mentioned!

  • I am a sucker for those Hallmark Christmas movies.  It's only November 18 and I have watched one called "One Starry Christmas" 3 times already.   It's a sickness!

But, North Pole is definitely more on the kid movie side and less on the cheesy romantic side!
  • I thought of a few more! Santa Paws & Santa Buddies. Jack Frost is also really cute!

  • Thanks everyone!  I may take a walk to the library on my lunch sometime this week (if it warms up, ha!) to see if they have some of these.

Amber-I'm a sucker for them, too.  I was at my parents house over the weekend and my mom and I watched "let it snow" with DJ Tanner from Full HOuse....wasn't my favorite but I still love watching them :)  I'll have to look for one starry night!  Have you watched "Christmas with Holly"?  It's one of my favorites!

  • If you're Netflix users, there are a few specials on there that Jude loves.  Merry Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda Holiday especially.  Muppet Christmas Carol is on there, too.  I think we'll try that one this year.

  • I introduced EJ to Elf a couple years ago... so she was newly 4?  She loved it and never questioned the existence of Santa. Because he is IN the movie. Sure, not everyone believes in him... but that doesn't mean he doesn't exist.
  • Second Santa Paws & Santa Buddies - super cute
Girls love Elf - no problems with not believing
Of course all the old time animation ones = Year w/o a Santa Claus, Rudolph Shiny New Year, whats the one with the Kringles? etc..

  • I forgot about Muppet Christmas Carol, Noah loves that one!

I have seen Christmas with Holly.  I've watched that one 1.5 times already.   SICK!

  • We watch Pee Wee's Christmas special (is that weird??)  Does anyone remember Claymation Christmas with the California raisins?    I loved that as a kid!

  • I can probably still sing all of the California Raisin Christmas. My sister was obsessed with that show!

I think we'll try Muppet Christmas with Logan this year. "Watch out for the icy patch!" :)

  • I have the Claymation Christmas one! I loved that so much as a kid, and DH found the dvd for me for Christmas one year. It's the best!

How about Garfield and Charlie Brown Christmas? The animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas, too. Those aren't movie length, but they are really good.
