Feeling discouraged...

Me and my husband just got married on the 1st so this is my first NEST POST! Oh, boy!

We are looking into moving out of our apartment complex, and our lease isn't up until April. We really don't want to buy yet as he has very limited credit and mine isn't as high as I would like it to be and financially, we're just not quite there yet and we don't want to be drowning.

I can't seem to find a rental home that is in a decent area, has enough space, etc without us having to spend almost 2,000 a month. For that, I'm sure we could find a house. :(

Re: Feeling discouraged...

  • You are smart to continue to rent until you are ready - financially and otherwise to purchase a home.
You may have to adjust your views of what and where to rent.
Consider a duplex, or a small apartment complex, or a neighborhood that is safe, but not ideal or go with a smaller, but adequate sq ft. Rethink how you use space. Rethink your "stuff" - do you really need it all?
Check your expectations - remember that families post WWII lived in 1000-1200 sq foot homes with an average of 3-4 children. Now, many couples want more space just for themselves.

Remember that $2000 for a mortgage is just the beginning of your financial obligations where 2000 rent is sum total obligations.
Keep looking - you have time to find the right rental situation.
  • Do you have any children/pets? I think it's really easy to feel like you need to upgrade your living environment when you get married because that's what a lot of people do. But if you guys have a plan to buy in 2 years or something, making the sacrifice of a smaller living space now will definitely pay off in terms of saving for a down payment and working on raising your credit scores.

  • Think of yourselves as poor college students - be creative.
