Spendy mistake :(

This week I found a bed on facebook that looked awesome. King size- storage drawers in the footboard, had some scratches but no biggie. This morning we went to buy it, got it home and all set up. A couple hours later I get a text from DH that our bedroom smells like dog. I'm up in the middle of the night because my throat is sore from my allergies to pet dander, and I just know we are going to have to get rid of this bed. We only paid $200, but the kicker is we didn't need the box spring anymore because it is a bed with slats so we gave that to the people we bought the bed from as an exchange type thing. So we are out $200 for the bed, and looking online will have to spend another $200 or so on a new box spring.
I feel so freaking stupid right now. I'm hoping I can possibly sell the bed as a project piece to somebody/ if they refinish or paint it the smell would go away, I just don't have time for that in the near future. And I don't want to sleep on a mattress on the floor for long. Ugh, crappy weekend!

Ugh that sucks, I'm sorry.  Check out wayfair for box springs - we got a platform for our memory foam mattress for about $100 and free shipping.

I don't know if you have a BJs in your area but I've heard they are relatively cheap for mattressses/box springs too.

We tried vinegar on it yesterday to get rid of the smell- the room now smells like vinegar so we will have to see. Otherwise I've been told that if I carnish it, the varnish will lock the smell in. So I'm hoping it's not a lost cause, because I looked it up yesterday- it's a $2000 bed, so worth the effort to try to save it.

My son is severely allergic to cats (waking up bleeding every morning from scratching, vomitting several times a day from all the extra mucous etc).  We had three cats and unfortunately had to find new homes for them.  Once we found them new homes with family members thankfully, I deep cleaned our house and used febreeze allergy and sprayed everything in my house, furniture, walls etc. His allergies cleared up immensely immediately.  If the bed is wood I would imagine you can clean it up.  Maybe bring it outside and wash it really well and use an allergy cleaner on it  That combined with some fresh air might help.

The vinegar has mostly done the job. Sorry I'm not posting. A lot- my phone has been kicking me off a lot again lately.
