When is the "right" time?

Now I know that there is no "right/perfect" time to get pregnant.

I'm a martial arts instructor, have always had the dream of opening my own school. There is no set date for this to happen. There is another instructor I work with who is at a different point in his life and wants to open his own school as well. He already has 2 children, 36 years old, is ready to "move out" and begin his own school in another state.

The house isn't so much my concern as opening my own martial arts school. Right now, I could open and run a school and probably get it up and running relatively successfully/making a profit within a year. However, building a house at the same time as starting a business seems like an extremely stressful endeavor. BUT my main concerns are with the "what ifs" -

What if I get pregnant, will I still be able to teach classes (it will be just me working there to start)?
What if I have a high-risk pregnancy or complications arise, what will become of my school then?
etc.

My thoughts are that I should stay with my boss's school for 2-3 more years, make sure my husband and I are stable in our home/finances and have a baby already before I open my own school. There are more complications for a young female business owner I feel than a male. I want to have talk with the other instructor and my boss either this week or next just so everyone is on the same page and we can talk through any concerns.

I am just curious to hear other's opinions of a "timeline" or what you wanted to have aligned before you start a family.

Re: When is the "right" time?

  • I agree that doing both at the same time sounds really stressful.

We didn't really have a bunch of defined goals before we started, but we were both already in our 30s before we met and married, so we didn't exactly have a ton of time to wait.

It sounds like you are on the right track with thinking things through,

  • there is never a right time to start a family. You have to decide what you want. For me, having a child was something I wanted more than anything. I put that goal first.
  • Since my career is a physical one I think I would put that on the back burner (I'd still be working as an instructor, just for someone else as opposed to owning my own) and start a family first.
  • It's really up to you and what you want. It's a tough decision. Having a child doesn't mean you can't still accomplish your goals, it just means you might have to be a little bit more creative in how you accomplish them. Good luck with whatever you decide.
