XP: Organizing a VERY SMALL mudroom / laundryroom

Hi ladies. I just bought my first house with my husband and 17m daughter. The "public areas" of the house, the kitchen/dining/family room combination and play room, really make it a great house for us. But there is always a "but..."

We enter the house from the garage, into the mudroom / laundry room. It leads directly into the kitchen. This room is extremely small. And I think it's lack of organization makes us extremely unorganized. I posted a picture of what it looks like (excuse the messiness!)

As you can see, there is storage. What is in there now is laundry supplies and extra small kitchen appliances that won't fit in the kitchen. We live in New Mexico, so locations for big puffy coats is NOT necessary. But I'd love a place to organize my purse, the diaper bag for daycare, our coats, etc. They end up all over the place in the house and make life more difficult in the morning. I think hanging storage on the walls would be the most likely to be utilized, but I don't know if that works for this tiny room.

As we  just bought the house, money is tight. So there is no way the storage that is already in the room is coming down or changing significantly. I'm looking for lower cost additions or changes we could make.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Re: XP: Organizing a VERY SMALL mudroom / laundryroom

  • What is on the wall opposite the washer and dryer?  Can you use any of the space there for a shelf and row of hooks?
    Look on pinterest for ideas.

Longterm, you might want to consider a stackable washer/dryer and use the adjoining space for a tall storage/seating unit (a combination of closed cabinet/open shelves and seating underneath.
  • Sometimes you can find a shelving unit/set that can slide in between the washer and dryer. Measure before you buy anything. And, you may try to move the two appliances further apart from one another to fit in the shelves.

Try installing a row of narrow shelves above the washer and dryer and beneath the cabinets. It might be a place for smaller baskets that contain smaller things like keys, etc..

Inside your cabinets, be sure to maximize the vertical space. Buy shelves that go inside cabinets to make more shelves. Not sure what these are called, but I know the Container Store has them.

Get hooks for the backs of the doors.

Check out the Container Store website for more ideas and storage configurations using their Elfa System. It's a bit on the pricey side, but DH and I used it in our horribly small laundry room at our previous house. We spent about $300. It's VERY user friendly and easy to install! No regrets on the money we spent.

It appears that the door from the laundry room into the other space (kitchen?) swings inward into the laundry room, which I assume makes your laundry feel more cramped. Why not remove the door off its hinges and leave an open walkway between the two spaces? I only recommend this, though, if the view from the kitchen or other room isn't made yucky by seeing the laundry machines and mud room stuff.

Ditto PP, please send a picture of the other sides of the space. Beyond this, it's tough to provide more ideas.
