Beginner Cooking Recipes??

Up until this point in my life I haven't been a healthy eater by most definitions. My cooking typically involves pasta (my main lunch meals), chicken wings, steak, anything that is frozen/boxed, baking and breakfast foods - other than that I am lost. I am beginning to lose taste for my junk foods and find myself going hungry as there is nothing to eat except for pasta (which I am getting sick of eating all the time). I can't afford to be buying frozen boxed foods and with a heart condition I am supposed to limit sodium intake.

Also since we are hoping to start trying for a baby in a year I want to have some cooking base so I can start making family meals without prepackaged foods.

I've been trying to look up simple beginner recipes but it is hard to know where to get started and most beginner recipes seem to assume that I already know how to cook!

  • My go to healthy recipes are usually from www.skinnytaste.com  She also has a bunch of slow cooker recipes, which are always easy.  You just throw everything in, set it and forget it.

Good luck!  The more you cook, the easier it will get.

  • I really like to pan sear fish (salmon and halibut are my favorites) in some olive oil, garlic, and S&P and serve with green beans and yellow rice. You can replace the rice with another veggie if you want.

You can also grill chicken and use for salads, or shred it (or dice) and make chicken salad.

DH and I make baked egg rolls, which are fabulous. We use bagged cabbage (coleslaw cabbage in the bag) and pan fry it. We add in chicken, carrots, and soy sauce. Put mix in the egg roll wrappers. Put cooling rack inside cookie sheet with edges and place egg rolls on top of cooling rack. Spray with Pam spray (or something similar) on both sides, and bake at 350 for about 15 minutes. Turn over halfway through cooking to brown on both sides. We eat them with mustard!

I probably should invest in getting a slow cooker! Thanks for the link.

  • When I started cooking I went to sites like Kraft Recipes, Betty Crocker, Budget Bytes, etc. They were easy to search, and had a ton of quick and simple recipes.

  • I have three slow cookers (all different sizes), and I really like having the options.
