BS in Psychology - What Job Do I Get?

Seriously. I'm graduating in May and I still have no idea what I want to do when I get out. It's basically been like this since I was in high school (they didn't really give me any tips to figure this out) I feel like I want to go into Social Work like a Clinical Social worker or work in child services, but I know this requires a Masters. I am burnt out on school and I'm so ready to be done. I know I want to work somewhere where i have my own cubical or office. I researched HR jobs and I think I would be a good fit with my degree. Does anyone else have a BS in psych and if so what are you doing?

I'm not a psych major, but I have an education degree yet I've never worked in education. I currently work as an executive assistant at a joint action agency and I've held lot's of other administrative type positions. HR seems to be a field that is being squeezed out. But it definitely is a good fit for a Psych degree. If you are interested in working HR for a smaller business, you probably need to look into learning some basic quickbooks, etc. Usually you can go to a short class at your local community center for those trainings.

I'd also look into your state children and family services department. There are usually entry-level positions that don't require a social work degree. It's a high turnover field, so if you stick around, you could move up. 

What kinds of extracurriculars did you participate in? If you have the experience of working with kids, there are lot's of positions as house parents or temporary juvenile home supervisors. 

If you really can't make a decision, you could always consider trying out Americorps. It is very low pay, but it could give you the experience to figure out what you want to do next. You also either get student loan reimbursement or a stipend at the end of your service.

Was checking out the 9 to 5 board for the first time and saw this post. I have a Bachelor's in Psychology also, and tried doing social work but it wasn't for me. I've been doing HR/some accounting work for over 2 years now, and enjoy it.

When I left social work for HR, several people judgingly said 'oh but you're not using your degree anymore.' Couldn't be a bigger myth! I use my degree everyday - people skills, listening skills, patience (:)), critical thinking, etc. Many psychological principles apply in the workforce (just sit in any meeting and observe).

Do whatever you feel is right for you. I think getting your feet wet in the workforce for at least a couple years can be very beneficial, you get a break from school and can save up a little, before going back. But you can always go back - career and schooling changes happen all the time! Good luck!
