Anyone have a good doula rec for me?

I really want to avoid the epidural this time (had some issues with it last time) but the only way I feel like I can accomplish that is to have somebody in the room with me helping me every step of the way.  I love dh, but he just kind of stands there with a deer in the headlights kind of look.  I have no idea where to even start looking for a doula.  I know doulas aren't "new" but it's all new to me.

I am using Amy from Blessed Arrivals.  She is north of the city, but I know she has done deliveries at all of the city hospitals.  Obviously I can't speak to the delivery itself, but we have met together 2 times and it has been very nice.  She has made me feel comfortable, helped me prepare a birth plan (as much as you can plan) and has answered my questions through email.

In her response to my initial inquiry she was very interested in getting to know me, my history, etc.  I contacted another doula service (can't remember which) with questions and a request for info and just got back the email equivalent of  "here's our contract.  LMK when you want to sign."  I was a bit put off.  I feel like someone should "work" at least a little bit to get your business.

If you can wait 4 1/2ish :-S more weeks, I'll be glad to provide a complete review.  I think there are some "meet the doula: nights, but I can't remember when they are.  Amy and I set up our meetings independently due to my schedule.

Thank you!  I have been finding a lot of good things about Amy from Blessed Arrivals online.  Would you mind me asking what a going rate is for a doula?  You can pm me if you want.

Side note...I can't believe you are down to the last month!

  • Our doula was from Hearts and Hands. We had a very good experience with her, though I don't know if she is still working as a doula or what the rates are now.

My goal was a VBAC and to go as long as I could without an epidural, so I wanted some extra support and an advocate for my birth plan.

  • I used Teresa Bailey, who was with heart and hands at the time.

I was really happy with her. I made it through both labors medication free.

I paid around $500 for a few prenatal meetings, birth, and a postnatal visit.

A friend of mine used Teresa as well and really, really liked her.
  • lala...what was your issue with the epidural?  What hospital are you delivering at as I can make a few calls to assure you have a different experience if it's somewhere I have my connections.

  • We hired Wendy Eson from Hearts and Hands way back in the day.  I am not sure if she is still around though either, but I liked her and we had a good experience.  I did end up with the epi, but I was able to hold off for some time with her support and help. (DH wasn't going to be able to give me that-I love him, but he is no birth coach)
  • I don't have a rec for a doula, because I didn't use one, but I did have a med-free birth with both of my kids.  We took the "Lamaze: Beyond Basics" class at Magee.  And I read a few books and talked to others about their experiences.  I think my insane fear of needles put me at an advantage of a med free birth.

As for DH, I wouldn't say he coached me, as I was the one leading the show telling him what I wanted/needed, but he was certainly an advocate for me.  When the Dr. was trying to push pitocin the minute I got moved out of triage I started second guessing everything, because "the doctor was telling me to do it."  He just looked at me and said, "tell her what YOU want."  He reminded me to trust myself and to listen to my body.

If you're interested I'd be happy to talk about what helped/worked for me.

With my first, the epidural numbed my legs but not the important area.  With my second, it worked well.  But, when they removed the needle, they said it didn't come out clean (???) and to beware I could get spinal headaches.  Thankfully, that didn't happen.  I just kind of feel that I don't really want to mess with it this time.  I had always planned to go med free with my other delivers, but I didn't have the skills/help needed to get me there.

That was at Magee.  I will be at West Penn this time.

This is the exact reason I hired a doula!

I believe Amy is in the $575 range.  It is payble in installments.
  • Yep...I'm not much help at West Penn.

I'm a huge epidural proponent and huge proponent of pain management for whatever type of surgery you're having.  I don't believe in med-free childbirth ;)  Nothing sucks (from my perspective) more than having someone at 8 or 9 cm who had been laboring all day decide to get an epidural and can't sit still and is just too uncomfortable and takes forever to get comfortable because the adrenaline is flowing or worse pushing for an hour or 2 and having to go do an epidural on that person and then wham, 5 minutes of relaxation later, a baby is born!

I'm sorry but this is really judgemental. Yes, it is your opinion and occupation but if someone wants to go this route it isn't for you to judge especially since she had possible complications with her last epidural.

  • You can do what I did, with #3 - be in complete denial that you are in labor all weekend so that when you are finally woken up by a contraction, at 11pm, you rush to find someone to watch your other two kids and then drive the 25 miles to Magee to make it in time. I had a med-free VBAC delivery and had Sean at 12:30a.

LOL....it might end up like that.  Being a mom of 3 is a little overwhelming to me.  I can totally see myself being in denial at the start of labor.
