Who would I like to see run in 2016?

Ben Carson, M.D.

I'm reading one of his books right now. I like this guy.

He is a pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins. Undergrad at Yale. MD from U. Michigan. From Detroit and raised by a single mother.

Anyone else? Thoughts?

Gosh, I pray we don't have another Bush running.

  • someone very new. I don't think there is a person right now connected enough to either party to get nominated that hasn't sold their soul to advance their career. I really wish we could vote "none of the above". I'm tired of both sides and think we need something new.

I agree with you on the "someone new" part. I do know that Ben Carson had an Independent party affiliation, which he changed to Republican. I guess that could be considered a sell-out move, or it may just be a wise move to get "seen."

If we're honest, pigs would have to fly for an Independent to get elected in this political climate. And, if he's just being shrewd to get his platform out there, then I'm okay with that swap.

I like the idea that he is a doctor and not a lawyer/career politician. To me that's fresh and real-world application.

Plus, if the Dems are pulling for a Hillary run, Carson would be a great candidate to run opposite her. Again, being blunt, in these elections gender and race matter, as many folks are tired of the old, rich, white guy perception/reality. So, it cannot hurt that Carson is African American from an inner-city, rough background.

I would like and pray Dr. Ben Carson runs! He is extremely intelligent, genuine and cares about people. We need him or someone like him.

This is me too! I'm sick of all the games. No bushes, Clinton's, etc - a fresh face would be good.

  • Rand Paul.  I'd be happy with Ben Carson too.  I think the two of them running against each other would be interesting.  Plus I live in NH so it's super easy to meet any candidate, and I'd love to meet both of them.
  • Just saw today that Mike Huckabee is leaving FoxNews - assumptions are a 2016 Presidential run.

I'm still for Ben Carson, though, and am just sharing this as a point of interest.

I don't either. Huckabee is a nice guy but I don't see him making it. However, if he did run and won I would be happy. I am really pulling for Ben Carson though. I think he can turn things around for America or at least get us going in the right direction.
  • If Huckabee runs... gah I'll scream.  And I'm a Republican.

Agreed. Who the GOP elects for the general election will be VERY telling about what the GOP stands for. I'd never become a Democrat - as I cannot support some of their positions due to my beliefs, but I would leave the Republican Party if Bush is the presidential choice.

I think I'm about on the brink of leaving the Rebup party.  I find myself being more Independent voter than anything else right now.  Even if a guy like Ben Carson is likely to be a top runner for the GOP I'm sure some crazy crap will come out that will prevent it from happening.  It seems like you have to have all the money and be a lying politician to get in the running anymore.

  • Just saw on CNN that in a CNN poll of Republicans, Carson came in 2nd behind Romney. They stated he is a "political phenomenon." This may be interesting!

Awesome for Dr. Carson!!!!! I think Mitt will have a hard time running against Hillary. Dr. Ben Carson would definitely give her a run for her money. Not everyone knows about him so he will gain quickly. He is so genuine and inspiration! Love him to pieces!! I think he would stand a great chance of winning 2016. Do we know if he's running yet?

I watched a bit of fox on sunday and all they had to talk about so far was Mitt and Bush - neither of which I think are good candidates for 2016.  I may be voting Independent depending on who runs.

Yeah....people seem to think a doctor can't run for presidential office. Not sure why. Not smart enough? Not a good reason. Not savvy enough? Not a good reason, either. Not well-versed in the bureaucratic game enough? Why would you want a slick politician if you didn't have to have one? In his book, Carson points out that five medical doctors were signers of the Declaration of Independence, which means they had to be part of and present for the discussions and deliberating - very political.

Carson is obviously smart - brilliant actually, he was the first MD to successfully separate conjoined twins. Head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. No dummy. Plus, he understands the class warfare struggles having grown up in inner city Detroit with a single mom who had only a 3rd grade education. He is a story of someone who came from having little and working his way despite racial, and economic odds stacked against him.

I just think he is refreshing not just for the GOP but for Washington in general. I enjoy his bluntness and like that he just speaks the truth without worry about who of the multi-millions of people in the USA his words might offend.

Lastly, I like that while he holds onto conservative values and lifestyle, he recognizes that there are far greater issues we have other than social ones - energy, education, taxes, healthcare. He uses this depiction of the USA as a ship going over Niagara Falls. People are leaning over the side worried about the barnacles clinging to the boat only to fail to focus on the fact that the ship/country has graver issues.

He was an independent, but feels passionate to see if he could be a candidate and is taking this seriously, which I think is why he swapped to Republican. Or, president is always a Rep or Dem. I'm not in favor of that, but it's the way it is.

I've read that he is going to officially toss his hat in the ring by or around May 1.

I honestly don't know much about him, but I would be fine if he ran for office.  I'm so sick of how divided our political parties are I'm ready for someone not in the crazy political world.  We are still a bit far out, but if the person I really want or can relate to is in the Independent party - that's where my vote is going.

I hope not.  not sure though

  • I don't want her to run either. I know this is not nice to say but her voice goes right through me. I do think she is smarter than she comes across.

I also really like Marco Rubio!! He is smart and sincere. I do think he would look out for the people, like Dr. Ben Carson.

  • Are you guys serious about Ben Carson?

He argued for a flat tax and based it off of the tithe principal from the Bible. A flat tax would disproportionally affect lower income families.

He doesn't believe in evolution. I mean seriously, he thinks the world is 6,000 years old.

He stated in a recent interview that if elected president he would pass legislation to undue the recent gay marriage decision by the Supreme Court. He believes homosexuality is a choice and has compared it to bestiality and pedophilia.

His own website is lacking in actual ideas or strategies to implement any of the issues he's taken a stand on.

If you saw my other post, I'm obviously voting for Bernie Sanders. He's an Independant from Vermot running against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. He has a solid voting record of over 30 years in government, and the things he did as mayor of Burlington, VT are a testament to what he's capable of. He not only has views on how to improve our economy, education, and infrastructure, but he has also written solid policies and legislation to make it happen.
