How do I deal with salt and puppy paws in the winter?
If it was up to me we would not have any salt on our sidewalks . . . or we would at least be using the expensive salt safe for pets. However, we live in a huge apartment complex. There is salt all over the entry's of our side walks, and some used on the walks as well. I can tell it is bothering my baby, and he will use puppy pads inside if absolutely necessary but he always barks and fusses and would rather go outside. I have been trying to clean his paws when we come back in with warm water.
He will occasionally lift them and I can tell they are painful for him, they must be getting burned from the salt. What can I do to make this better? How do you prevent your babies from walking in the salt?
Re: How do I deal with salt and puppy paws in the winter?
This reminds me that we are starting to run low and I should probably get some more too.
We live in the city, and they salt the roads heavily. We use Musher's Secret wax for shorter trips outside (potty breaks) and boots for longer walks because I find that the wax wears off after some time outside. The wax can leave a residue on floors/furniture, so I put it on immediately before going out and wipe it off with a damp cloth as soon as we come back in. In addition to hurting their paws, the salt can wreak havoc on a pup's digestive system, so make sure to clean your pup's paws thoroughly each time.
