I know some of you were interested in parties at Animal Friends. Keira had hers on Sunday from 3-4:30. There were about 12 kids there total & the volunteers ran everything so I didn't really have to do anything except show up. I did bring animal crackers & juice boxes but the kids really didn't even need them. There were about 4-5 volunteers there but one of them was in charge & the others must have been new b/c they really didn't know what was happening next or anything. The head volunteer was really friendly and organized. The others weren't too adept at talking to kids but everyone was helpful when you asked. They started out decorating their gift bags, played dog bingo, took a tour of the shelter & then came back in the room for another craft. Then they brought a puppy in and everyone got to pet him & Keira held him while they took a group picture. Then it was time for cake & it was over. Some did bring gifts for her so she opened them at the very end. We asked for donations to the shelter instead and everyone brought something to donate so that was nice.
Overall, it was quick & easy - I think they could do more with talking to the kids about animals and what they do but for kindergarten kids it wasn't a big deal. They were entertained the whole time. For older kids I would want more vs. just being in the room playing a game & crafts b/c I can do that at home. And I can take the kids to the shelter and walk around for free. Maybe in the summer there are more options.
Alot of the moms commented that they had never been there before & it was a really nice idea to have it there. The only thing was they didn't want parents in the party room so they didn't take away from the kids. Some moms left and others stayed in case their kids got nervous around the animals but all of the kids were totally fine. And if they didn't want to pet the dog they didn't have to.
ALso, Keira got to name the next dog/cat/rabbit that comes to the shelter so she picked a rabbit and named him "Oreo".
I think it satisfied her desire to have a dog for at least another year!
