QOTD 1/20

I don't know if y'all have even heard of www.airbnb.com but it is a place where you can rent a room (or apt/house) from someone.  I heard this morning that there is also an app called airpnp where you can rent a bathroom.

Would you ever offer your place on one of these site?  Would you ever rent something from one of the sites?

  • I might use it. But I'd probably never offer my house.

  • I have heard of AirBnB but I'd never use it.  I'm not sure how much of a background check the do (if any) on people putting their places up for use.  That being said, when my mom and I went on a road trip a few years ago we stayed at B&Bs and hotels that were recommended by CAA (the Canadian AAA) and thankfully the majority were not sketchy.

I'd never rent my house to strangers.

  • I would never rent out our house or room, but have used vrbo before and are renting a small house for our EDD getaway next month.

  • We've used VRBO a few times and it's been ok for the most part.  The last place we rented smelled weird but since it was a lakehouse, we attributed the smell to that.  Well, later on in the first night, I was laying down on the couch and a mouse ran by.  I was not a happy camper after that.

I wouldn't let people rent out my personal home, but I've thought about investing in a rental property.  Some of those places make tons of money!

  • I've heard of VRBO and looked places up before. I would be willing to stay in one of those places, but I'd never rent my house out.

  • I would never rent out my house.  I would not let a stranger sleep in my bed.  You never know what they could bring in.

I don't think I would use AirBnB to rent a place.  I know there are a lot of problems in NYC with it.  People are trying to run unlicensed bed and breakfasts using that site.  At least in NYC, bed and breakfasts are regularly inspected.  You never know what you get from a place that has no one to report to.

On our honeymoon, we were talking to a couple who have used sites like VRBO to travel the world.  They said they stay at one resort a year and the rest of their travel is in rented homes.  They had good things to say about it.  I'm a hotel fan though.
  • Well, legally I couldn't rent out my house since it's actually a rental itself. (Basing this assumption off an episode of some reality TV show I saw where people were sent to investigate a noise complaint at a house and the person had participated in a house swap without notifying their landlord)

I do agree with prior posts though. It's an interesting concept, but I think I'd have too many trust issues with renting out a place to someone else. I went nuts just having the plumbers come in here and dirty up my house without my being here. :-(

  • My friend uses AirBNB all the time. Her parents used it to rent a place for them to stay / wedding party to get ready for her wedding. The house that they rented was AMAZING. She also used it to rent some places all around the Big Island of Hawaii for their honeymoon (they switched rentals every few days to see different parts of the island).

H and I used Home Away (I think that was the name) a few years ago to rent a condo in Cape Cod. It was a little smaller than the website advertised and the beach wasn't as nice as the pictures at all, but it was fine.

I don't think I would rent out my house unless it was a vacation home only. My mom's friend rents out her lake house during the summer, but it's a second home.
