Job Search While Working

Any advice for finding a new job while still employed? My company has had extremely high turnover lately, and our work policy states that we need to find our own coverage to take any time off (including sick leave). With no one able to cover my shift should I need to go to an interview, what should I do? I know it is not advisable to just quit without employment lined up in advance, but I am kind of feeling I may have to do this in order to get another job. Has anyone been in this situation before? What did you do?

My advice would be to send out resumes, try to schedule a phone interview first that you can do on your lunch break, and then if you get a second interview see if you can get a friend to cover your shift (a little white lie about a doctors appt can come in handy here). It is significantly easier to find a job when you're already employed, and its a bad idea to jump ship before you see a lifeboat.
I'm not sure what field you're in, but finding a temp agency might be a good idea. They can set you up with short term 6-18 week jobs (that may be temp to perm) and give you some breathing room while you hunt for the "right" job.
