did you shop around for a mortgage?

The rates are so low already. just wondering if folks shopped around for a mortgage and if there were substantial differences in prices quoted.
Also- any recommendations of places to try in particular?

Re: did you shop around for a mortgage?

  • We didn't. We used PNC since we bank there and got a discount for having automatic payments from our account. It was mostly painless since I deal with the branch everyday.

  • Yes, definitely. Our situation was a little different bc it was a corporate relocation and my work gave us 3 banks to choose from. I talked to all 3 and the rates varied between them by just over 1% which makes a big difference.

We used Wells Fargo on our old house and they have great customer service but in my experience they have higher rates (they also happened to be the highest of the 3 banks we could choose from with our current place).

We used CitiMortgage for the current house bc they had the lowest rates. I've been really happy with the customer service so far (18 months).

We checked a few places and got the lowest rate from Jackie Brinker at Citizens and then an additional discount for banking with them.  Jackie was great to work with. https://www.citizenslo.com/1003.asp?WebFolder=JBrinker

  • Yes and no.  We did. I called several banks when our new construction was coming to a close to try to convert to a traditional mortgage.  We had our credit reports and provided them with the numbers, etc for estimates for mortgage interest rates and all of them were higher than the rates we locked in for our new construction loan so we didn't pursue it further.

We are happy with Washington Financial (we used for new construction and kept for mortgage).  We liked Bank of America when we had it for our old house.

  • We did and are getting one through a mortgage company instead of one of our banks. They were the cheapests and the easiest to get a hold of,
  • We talked with a friend who works with policing predatory lenders.  He recommended Sky Bank (and it was also the bank we were going to use for banking since it was closest to our house).  Their rates were good at the time and we were happy with the process.  They've changed to Huntington Bank and we refinanced through them a few years ago - their rates were still very good and we've been happy with them.
  • When we built, our construction loan converted to a 15 year mortgage amortized over 30 years, meaning we'll have to refinance sometime in the next 15 years.  I've been keeping an eye on mortgage rates, but haven't shopped around yet.

We currently have Huntington and I've had no complaints.  Our previous mortgage on our old house was with Dollar Bank and I didn't have any complaints with them either.

  • we checked with quicken and PNC. we tried to work with quicken, but they were not on top of things. so we went with PNC, and it was such an awful experience that i ended up reporting everything to the supervisor of our loan officer. we actually tried to change the mortgage to another bank but the rates were higher and switching meant extending our closing date and we knew the sellers would back out if we did that. our loan officer was terrible, didn't know what she was doing, wasn't doing anything, and generated paperwork with incorrect information several times and refused to correct it. even the bank manager that we spoke with admitted that mortgage loans are not PNC's strong point.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!
