Hi all! My husband and I recently moved out of our 1 bedroom apartment and into a tiny 2 bedroom starter home! We're not planning on having children for a few years, so we're turning the second bedroom into a guest room/office.
I'm conflicted on what size bed to put in that room. It's a very small room (9 1/2 ft x 11 ft), and we have a small desk in one corner. If we put a queen size bed, there'd be about an 18" clearance between the desk and the bed, so it'd be a tight fit. If we put a twin bed, there'd be about a 3' clearance. My mom suggested a twin trundle daybed, so that we could use it as seating/a reading nook when we don't have guests.
I'm hesitant to put twin beds in there because I think couples generally like to sleep together when they visit. My parents are selling their house and moving out of state, so I'd like to have a place for them to stay when they're here. My brother and sister-in-law live about 1.5 hours away, and it'd be nice for them to be able to stay over when they come to visit. But, the majority of our guests will probably be my college friends, most of whom are single, so trundle beds might be better for them. But, we're still young (husband and I are 23 and 24), and most of my female college friends have no problem sharing a queen bed when they stay over.
Any suggestions on what type of bed to put in there? I thought about a queen bed with a twin trundle roll-out, but the twin trundle wouldn't actually fit in the room with a queen size bed - we'd have to pull it into another room.
Re: Guest bedroom - queen or twin trundle?
I would go with your mom's suggestion of a twin trundle. It will give you the space that you need on a daily basis. When you have a single guest come they can just sleep on the twin and still have room themselves when they visit. When you do have couples visit, they can always push the beds together. And even if they can't cuddle up with each other as well, it's just a few nights, they will survive. And with a twin bed when you do have a child, you have room in there to put a crib when the baby outgrows the crib you can move them into the twin. The trundle then can double for as they get older and have friends sleep over. My niece had a trundle growing up & it was great for sleep overs or when cousins came to visit, now it's been moved to a guest room for the same use that you will do.
Another option is a queen size sleeper sofa, but I'm not sure if those would be as comfortable to sleep on compared to a regular mattress that you would have with a trundle.
We have a full size bed in our guest room.
