Moving to the north hills!

hey!
We are under contract on a home in Ross Twp! We are excited! I have some questions i'm hoping you can help me out with.
I guess we'll need to change our pediatrician to be more convenient to us. any recommendations? any other kid or family related recommendations for the area? what swimming pool do you use?  Son will start Ross elem in kinder this fall.  if you are already at the school do you like it?

Any other info you think i should know?

Re: Moving to the north hills!

  • welcome to Ross!!  We use CCP Pittsburgh Pediatrics in Wexford; we primarily see Dr. Rowland, but we've seen a bunch of docs for sick visits and all of them have been very nice.

My son isn't in Ross, but I've been happy with the district overall.  We have only been to a pool in that area once (I can't even remember which one it was) but there are private pools you can join, as well as North Park. There's lots to do in the area if you're looking for, say, get the kids out of the house type stuff....2 bouncy places (Jump Zone in Allison Park and Bounce U in Wexford), a carpet skate park that opened fairly recently (Jake went there for a field trip over the summer and loved it!), family events at the ross community center (I believe if you go on their site you can look at a PDF of the latest newsletter they sent out that will have classes & events listed)

Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Welcome to the North Hills!

We go to Pediatric Alliance Northland Division. We mostly see Dr Kilpela, but like all of the Dr.'s. Their office is on McKight Road across from Red Lobster.

We love Crawford swimming pool (Shaler) and the Shaler North Hills Library. If you are at Ross Elem. I think those should be close to you. We also like North Park pool and
    Avonworth.

In addition to the places Emmy mentioned, there is also Glow Golf by Ross Park Mall.

I grew up in Franklin Park and now live in Shaler...if you need other recommendations, don't hesitate to ask!
  • Oh yes, Shaler has lots of stuff, and I would recommend Northland Library as well.

  • We use pediatric alliance northland too but we see Dr Garbon. I've liked everyone though.

In addition to all of the recommendations, we also love shaler library's kids programs.

  • I used to live in the neighborhood where Ross Elementary is. There is a swim club very close. Valley Brook swim and tennis club. Another recommendation for CCP Pgh Peds. We see Dr. Turzai. But I think we have seen almost every doctor in the practice and have loved them all. Congratulaitons and good luck on the move!
  • Oh and my sister teaches at Ross and that's where I went until 4th grade. It's a solid school.

  • I was also going to say Valley Brook - really close and fun.  I grew up in Ross but live now in Franklin Park & my Ped is in Wexford (Dr. Adhar) but well worth the trip.  She always answers her phone & no wait when you see her.  Let me know if you want her info.

I use this same practice, at the shadyside/oakland location, and I've really liked the doctors I see. Our primary is Dr. Butler. The kids and I adore him.

  • thanks everyone! i appreciate it!
  • Another one for Pediatric Alliance Northland. We love Dr Kilpela, but all the doctors are fabulous!

My daughter goes to McIntyre, but I think the district is pretty good for elementary schools.

  • Mrs Yam--I can't remember if I've asked you this, who does your daughter have at McIntyre?  Were you at open house the other night?  It's always a fun (hectic, but fun) night to see them in their element :)

  • She has Miss Congelio. I believe she was a first grade teacher last year, but moved to kinder this year. She's an awesome teacher. Young and full of new ideas.

We were at Open House. We got there at 5:00 so it wasn't that hectic around the school. It was nice seeing all the things she was doing and her specials teachers. So far, I love McIntyre.

That's great that she has a wonderful teacher!! We got to open house around 6:45 and it was hoppin'!  :)  we've been happy with McIntyre, too....I could do with less homework this year, but that seems to be the case amongst a lot of schools, not unique to ours.  hard to believe they're more than halfway done with the year!

Oh I know. I was actually surprised by the homework. She has work 2 times a week, usually math and reading. It's not hard, but it's still homework. Some of the other teachers don't send home work though. Guess she's getting them prepared for next year.

  • Oh yeah. I tear up thinking about her getting on the bus already. I'll be a mess! haha At least she'll have her big sister to help her navigate through her first couple of days.

  • Our pediatrician practice opened a Cranberry office last year.  Kids Plus Pittsburgh. I have no idea how close/far that is from Ross Twp.

I know Dr. Godinez is now out in that office exclusively, and we really liked him.

  • We moved to Wexford last January.  We love Kids Plus Pediatrics (and Dr. Godinez like Valkaz mentioned) in Seven Fields/Cranberry.  Depending on where you are in Ross, it would probably be about a 15-20 minute drive.  I was excited to see on the news last night they are installing the special lights to help with the traffic issues on McKnight Road.  There are a few shortcuts you can take to avoid some of the Cranberry/Mars traffic.

Kids places we are enjoying:  BounceU,  Kids Kuts by Karey in Cranberry (but ONLY have Karey the owner cut your kids hair),  I haven't tried it yet but they recently opened a Goldfish Swim School in Franklin Park.

Favorite playgrounds:  Blueberry Hill has the best toddler playground (and tends to be less busy),  older kids- the new Cranberry Playground is awesome and worth the drive!

Congrats on your closing and good luck on the move!  I have lived East, West, South, and North of the city and the North is by far my favorite- especially for a family!

  • Also Dentistry for Kids just moved to McKnight Road by McCandless Crossing (on Fitness 19 side).  They really are good - in and out very quickly & very nice.
