Advice - unemployed

I am on day two of being unemployed. I was laid off on Wednesday. I seem to remember that some of you have been through this. Any tips? Unfortunately, I don't have a four year degree. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Jodie

Re: Advice - unemployed

  • I've been there, hugs.  :(  what kind of work would you be looking for?  Have you filed for unemployment yet?  Be sure to do that ASAP.

  • Unemployment can be the pits, but it can also be a great opportunity.  If you haven't already, file your UE claim ASAP, sometimes there can be hold-ups that take a bit of time.

Dust off your resume, make any additions or deletions if necessary.  When I was unemployed I started thinking about a career change of sorts, so I started looking at the types of jobs I might want to do, and mapping how my past experiences made me qualified for them.

I spent a lot of time on indeed.com, and other various websites, but I seemed to have the most success getting interviews when I paired up with recruiters.

I was also required to go to a job search/course through Pa Careerlink (I think that's who it was through) while I was unemployed.  They outlined a lot of services that could be of assistance (I ended up getting a job offer the same day,so I didn't look into them further.

  • My friend is a recruiter and she always suggests keeping your linked in profile updated and make frequent small changes to keep your profile showing activity. Good luck!

  • I know you won't want to do this right away, if you're going to get unemployment for a while, but Carnegie Mellon has a temp pool, if you get to the point where you need a job.  My co-worker came to us via the temp service, and we hired her for a full time position.  (And that happens often).   Just thought I'd mention it, so you can keep that in the back of your mind if you'd need to go that route.
  • I am a senior level administrative assistant. I also have some fundraising support experience. I have updated my LinkedIn and resume. I have applied to two jobs. I have a severance package, mood which I am very thankful. Thanks ladies for the suggestions!!
  • I just finished interviewing some candidates for an open job at my office.  One candidate was well qualified but did not move on in the process because she did not sell herself well enough in the interview.

Interview questions are an opportunity to describe your skills and give examples of your experience.  Practice for interviews using the STAR approach: describing a situation, your target, the actions you took and the results.  This is much better than just saying "yeah, I can do that."

  • Those tips are great. Thank you so much!
