Best Job Interview Outfit?

edited February 2015 in Fashion & Beauty
I am at a loss here in figuring out what should be my "go to" interview outfit. My interviews can only be during my lunch breaks so I need to pick an outfit that I can keep together on a hanger for speed dressing. I am applying for bank/financial services jobs so I think a jacket will go a long way but I only have 2 blazers and only 1 has a matching skirt (the pants I have just don't feel right). I tried every combination imaginable and came down with 3 options... I've added pictures for reference.

Option #1: No jacket, just a blouse with skirt - if I don't use a jacket I need to purchase a new dress shirt and of course wear a shirt beneath it so that they aren't staring at my bra during an interview.

Option #2: Brown jacket with grey skirt - this is my personal favourite because I am in love with the jacket. It is very comfortable to wear and easy to move in. My only hesitation is mixing it with the grey skirt as I have no sense of how good of a match that is.

Option #3: The matching grey jacket and skirt - the only problem with this for me is that the shoulders on the jacket is far too tight. It would need to remain open and even then it would be embarrassing if they watched me try to take my coat on of off. My mother says I need to wear a matching suit but I feel it could backfire if it clearly doesn't fit correctly.

Any input would be very much appreciated, I'd really hate to go with my favourite option to only find out that it doesn't look as good as I think it does.

  • Honestly, none of your top pieces fit you correctly.

I would purchase a new button-down shirt and pair it with the top skirt.

Blacks are fairly easy to match and you should be able to find a nice black jacket for a reasonable cost. I would suggest checking out New York and Company as they usually have good sales/coupons.

Thank you for letting me know, I had suspected that it wasn't how they were supposed to fit but I didn't know if I was just being insecure. I certainly need some button downs that fit me better and hopefully I can find someone to help me find a jacket that is a better fit.
  • I would look into getting a proper suit.  Think of it as an investment.  I also work in the financial industry and I wouldn't dream of going on an interview in anything but a tailored suit.  I really think first impressions are important and looking put together and professional will go a long way to making a positive first impression. Good luck!
  • I agree in making an investment in a suit.  A moderately priced suit can look much more expensive if you take it to a tailor.  Also as a side note, I think something with a slightly higher waist could be more flattering for your figure.
  • I am still working towards finding a good pant/skirt suit that fits better. Downfall of a small town is limited options... I did find a blouse that fits a lot better than the previous one, I am certainly not used to having a blouse fit me so well.

If I get an interview before I select a suit then it will have to due... I tried it with both a skirt and my black dress pants but I feel they both could either be fine or suck. The shirt does need to be ironed and the clips that is supposed to close up that hole on the chest needs to be sewed back into place.
