Medela PIS or Freestyle??

I need to order a breast pump today....has anyone tried both the PIS and the Freestyle?

I used the freestyle for #1 and #2 and was happy with it overall but I see it gets a lot of complaints about the suction online. I don't really remember that being issue but I also never tried the PIS (or any other pump) so I can't really compare. Any thoughts?

Re: Medela PIS or Freestyle??

  • I have a PIS and that's all I used so I was happy with it.  You are welcome to it, I am done & it has been sitting in the box in my basement for a few years.  You just need new tubing & parts.
I also have a Ameda Purely Yours that I got in 2011 & used once if you are interested in that.

  • I had a PIS with Jackson, and that was fine. I got a Freestyle with Michael.

I'd never go back to the PIS. The Freestyle was much, much better. I was able to pump hands free in my office, it was much lighter and just all around easier to use.

  • I have a Freestyle that I used with S and I really liked the mobility it offered.  I could do dishes, or prep dinner or something gentle.  (I couldn't bend over b/c of leaking!)  I even pumped in the car on the way to long meetings.  (Hooked up pump parked, turned it on and off as I drove, unhooked when I got there....wore the "udder cover" to prevent odd looks.)

I wasn't going to get a new pump this time, but my doc encouraged me to because insurance will cover it.  So, I did.  The Freestyle would have been a $150 upgrade, but the PIS was free, and since I still have the Freestyle I got the PIS.  I figured I could take it to work and leave it there, since I am stationary at my desk anyway.  I haven't used it yet, but I do know it needs to be plugged in.

Have you checked to see if your insurance will cover either of them?

FWIW - I couldn't ever get the "hands free" option for the Freestyle to work very well for me.  I got a cheap front-close sports bra and cut a small hole in each side.  Then I put the cone (flange?  I am blanking on technical terms due to lack of sleep...) on the inside and the rest on the the outside and could pump hands free.  Not very different than the bras they sell, but much cheaper!
