QOTD 2/19

So Mars One is a company that wants to send 24 people to Mars around the year 2024.  It is a one way trip.  They have narrowed their "finalists" down to their top 100.  Would you take a one way trip to Mars?  Is there anyone you would like to send on a one way trip to Mars?

Re: QOTD 2/19

  • I have zero interest in going to mars. Especially after reading "The Martian".  I would like to send a few people there. I have one sitting about 50 feet from me!

  • I definitely wouldn't. I don't have anyone, but I have some I'd like to put on a one-way plane far away from me! I couldn't wish them to mars, though.

  • Nope, but I could think of a handful of people I'd like to send there.
  • If I could take my family, I would. And if I didn't go, I can think of some I would like to volunteer!

  • Nope. Definitely not. I wouldn't wish anyone to go because there are a lot of people who actually DO want to go and I wouldn't want to wish their dream away from them.

  • I wouldn't go because its one way.  If it was round trip, then I might be interested.  There are a bunch of people that I would send one way though.

Al Roker from the Today Show said that he would send the Kardashian's on the trip so they could visit their home planet.

  • I actually know someone who is in the application process for Mars One. Took a look at the top 100 after reading this post, and was excited to see she had made the cut! I hope she does get to go. Mars is such a huge step in the history of human exploration and I know how much she wants to be a part of it.

I would and wouldn't want to go. On one hand, this is amazingly cool. You'd immortalize yourself in history by doing this. And plus, being one of the first people to set foot on another planet! I could deal with the hardship. But I couldn't deal with never seeing some of the people in my life again. Maybe if you'd asked me 10-15 years ago, I'd have a different answer. But now it would be way too painful to say goodbye.

  • People seriously went to my husband's office to get health forms filled out to apply for this. On the question of this person's mental state, he was like um insane for wanting to go to Mars forever?!

  • This is so beyond crazy to me!  I have no desire to ever do something like that because, honestly, I'd be too scared.  I can't think of anyone I'd want to send there, either.

  • I love learning about space and watching documentaries on it, but it's also one of my biggest fears.  So it's a no for me.  I don't think I'd send anyone there either, it scares me too much to even think about.

  • My fear would be that you're going with 23 other people. What happens if they never send more people? It's possible you could out live everyone and be totally alone.
  • I definitely wouldn't want to go to Mars, one way or round trip.  I don't know how these people could want to go someplace knowing they will never see their loved ones and friends again.

I can't think of anyone I'd like to send to Mars, although I joke with my class when they're getting annoying that I am going to launch them to the moon.
