people who fly frequently...

When do you usually book your flights?  My most recent flights have all been for work, and I just book whatever is available once I know I need to go.  We flew to Disney last year and got great prices the day the flights were released on Southwest.

Now I'm looking for our vacation coming up in August, it will be 4 of us flying to Montana....and wowza the flights aren't cheap!!
@-)

When is an ideal time to book?  I'm so nervous that I'm going to miss some window of opportunity and the prices will skyrocket even more...yet, I don't want to pull the trigger then regret it when I see prices drop.  Decisions, decisions.

  • I just saw this on FB today that the best prices are 6 weeks out on a Tuesday at 3pm! How is that for specific! I've seen this before about Tuesday's and around 6 weeks out but I never wait that long. I've booked further out and got good deals. Basically as soon as I know we are going somewhere I start looking at prices. I generally have an idea of what is high and what is good. Once it gets to a good # I book and don't wait too long. I do try the Tuesday thing and generally search that day.

  • I've heard the Tuesday thing (that's actually what got me thinking about it today, I checked first thing this morning but they had only dropped by a few dollars), but waiting until 6 weeks out?  I think I'd have a panic attack!

I know!!! I could never wait till 6 weeks out! But I have read Tuesday (and I think they used to say Thursday before too) multiple places. I just checked and our last trip I booked our Hawaii flights 12 weeks out. I felt like we got a really good deal and about as low as we would get for Hawaii. I wasn't willing to risk them going up since I was happy at that price. I guess I didn't check right at 6 weeks but I know I did look after we bought and prices had gone up.

I'm pretty sure if you book on southwest and flight prices go down, there is no change fee so you can rebook at the lower rate.

ETA:  I always book way in advance but I am flying to see my sister in Orlando 95% of the time so I know when the rate is the best it is going to get.

  • I would think the one month out average has to be brought down by business travel? Some of my business trips have been booked the day before travel.

I find that Sunday is usually the cheapest day to fly. Tuesday evening is supposed to be the cheapest time to buy but I normally would still see the same price Wed morning that was listed on Tuesday evening.

For personal travel I use kayak.com and set up alerts for rate changes on my travel dates. That way I don't need to monitor it myself, I just get automated updates.
  • I saw something yesterday that said 6 weeks prior to your trip on a Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.!

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest days to fly and there's really no evidence to back up the "buy on a whichever week day" theories.

ETA: sorry that sounds short and kind of b!tchy. I had to do something for work and jump offline quickly. Lol!

  • Sarah-you're forgiven, I didn't think it sounded b!tchy anyway. :)  we're doing saturday-saturday, no wiggle room there unfortunately, which I know is part of why it's a high price.  I guess I'll just keep stalking for now, thanks for all the feedback everyone!
