fire escape ladders

Sorry for this super fun topic but...

Does anyone have a 2 story fire escape ladder they can recommend?  It seems there's a big range of options/prices.  Obviously, I hope this is something I never have to use.  I feel like it's probably something that we should have in our house though.

Re: fire escape ladders

  • no, but i'm going to be following this post....don't laugh, but there was an episode of Hawaii 5-0 recently that had me panicked about the fact that we don't have ladders!

I also want to look into those little car emergency kits that include a special hammer that can break your windows if you are in water.

I have one of those hammer thingies!  They had a 2 pack at Costco.  It was last year, I think.  It breaks the window, cuts a seat belt, checks tire pressure and has a flashlight.  It's one of those things that you really want to try to see if it works, but you can't just go around shattering car windows.

  • YES!!!  That's exactly the kind I want.

I also want a ladder and car hammer thing! I don't think the ladder is super necessary in our house since Dd's room is right over the porch roof so we could go out there and jump down and not get hurt. (And our rooms are super close) but I still think that it would be good to have just in case.

I definitely want the hammer thing though. I totally have anxiety about being trapped in my car! Damn claustrophobia gets to me!

  • I am usually a lurker on this site, but thought I would chime in.  I have the Kidde KL-2s Two story fire escep ladder with anit-slip rungs.  I bought it on Amazon a year ago.  I made my husband try it out, and it does work.  The price is reasonable and it is easy to use.  My 5 year old even knows how to work it.

I also have the hammer thing, but not sure if it work.

Thank you!  Some of the reviews say it's a one time use thing.  You can't open it up and show the kids how to use it?

  • We have one in each of the boys bedrooms.   Some firemen came to Brody's school a few months ago on one of his off days, so he and I went together so he could still hear the presentation.   While the kids were looking at the firetruck, I chatted with one of the firemen about the best escape plan for our house.   We have a cape cod - so two bedrooms upstairs and one down.  The stairs are the only way up/down to our upstairs.  And the windows are very high.  They were concerned that we didn't have anything and pretty much scared me in to making a plan right away.  (they also told me that in cape cod's fire tends to travel up the walls very quickly).   We have ladders that kind of look like chain - it hooks on the window ledge.  Walt showed the kids how to use them - I'm not sure that they'd remember.  God forbid, though, that we ever need to use it.
