Decor for a Small Bedroom

My bedroom is small, maybe 4mX4m. I have a dark mahogany double bed with night stands. There isn't much space for anything else. There's a dado rail halfway down the walls and it's all painted light beige.
I want to paint it a different colour, maybe the bottom half a dark red or something. I also want to do something to the bookshelf to make it more eye-catching. (it's built into the wall and cannot be removed).
I;ve attached a sketch of my room to give an outline.

Any ideas will be welcome..

Re: Decor for a Small Bedroom

  • Bottom half?  Of the walls?  Is there a chair rail or something that divides the wall?

I'm 100% against dark paint in small rooms unless you are professional interior designer.  It takes a ton of skill to pull off a dark color in a small space.  It's so easy to end up with a smaller, more cramped looking looking.

I'd paint the bookshelf and trim white (if it isn't already).  If you want to do something fun with the book shelf, paint the insides a bright color.
  • Hello, I agree with the above - if you have a small room to do not paint only the bottom half it will cut the room in half and it will make it look smaller!

Before you paint your room - make sure how you want to feel in it first!

If you want to feel light and airy - i would choose a light colors light light blue, light gray, or even light pink!  and stay way from any color with a yellow tone!

For your bookshelf - you can add wallpaper to the inside of your bookcase.

    Hope this helps!

  • I've seen people use patterned/colorful wallpaper behind their white bookshelves which provides visual interest while keeping the structure clean.
  • I think I can help you out. I too have a small bedroom. It was very difficult to move around since the whole area was occupied by my bed and table. I tried removing the table and resorting to a smaller one. But that didn’t do much help. I came to hear of wall beds in Toronto through an advertisement. Though at first it seemed awkward, once I got it done in my room, it made my room look more spacious and elegant.

  • I second (or third) doing a bright color or wallpaper inside the bookcase and doing a lighter color in the room. =)
  • What was the end result? I'd avoid dark paints as peope have mentioned in this thread; not easy to pull off.
