Kids and ear piercing

If your dd has her ears pierced when did she have it done? Where did you go? How did your kid do with it? Any issues?

Dd really had no interest and all of a sudden said she wanted them done. We are planning a mother daughter day in a couple weeks (seeing Cinderella!) so was thinking of doing it that day. Are the mall places really ok or should I avoid? My main holes were done when I was a baby and 2nd hole and cartilage I had in my teens at I think the piercing pagoda...I guess it was ok enough! There is 1 other place in my area that I know of that is a kid salon and they do piercings so I was looking there too.

Re: Kids and ear piercing

  • We got DD's done over the summer (she was 5). She wanted them done. We just went to pricing pagoda in the mall. They were great. The one thing I would suggest is make sure there are 2 people working. Then they can do both ears at same time. This worked well as I was worried if only oine person we would get one ear done and then she wouldn't want the other. She didn't cry. I think she wanted to. Then just staying on the twisting and cleaning. :) We had a bad expereince then when we went to change the earring many weeks later..... but that was Madi being Madi.
  • We're planning on waiting til DD is older (I think I was 8 or 9 when I had mine done), mostly so it's something SHE wants and she will be old enough to take care of them.

I actually plan on taking DD to a piercing/tattoo place. I read an article where someone suggested this and it just kind of stuck with me. I contacted a place nearby where the piercer is highly recommended and she said she absolutely does little girl's ears. I don't think there's anything wrong with the mall places, I just like the idea of going to someone that focuses on piercing.

I have read about some people doing tattoo/piercing places. I was thinking about it....but I really don't know good ones in my area. I feel like it would freak dd out too! She would definitely prefer a girly place with frills to a tattoo studio!

  • DD got hers done last year - right around Father's Day, I believe. We just went to Claire's in the mall. While I like the idea of having both sides done at once, it didn't work out 100% for us because one side is lower than it should have been. I'm not sure if she jumped or what happened, but it was a little disappointing to me. In the future I think I'd only do one side at a time.

I also took numbing spray from work, and they kind of gave me a hard time about using it. I should have sprayed it on her ear lobes before we even walked into the place. ;)

  • DD was 4 when she got her ears pierced. She got them done at Piercing pagoda at the mall. They did a good job with them and my daughter did well with having them done. She doesn't like tochange them even now 18 months later she still has the original silver balls bc she said it hurts

  • Both my girls got their ears pierced at 6 months old. I think they were both done at the place in the mall. We've never had any issues with infections. My oldest loves to change her earrings to match her outfits now.

I asked my ped about this on our last well visit and he told me no need to go to anywhere other than the mall. Ear piercing has come a long way... They now have disposable piercing that just snap in the earring easily. We just got my daughters ears pierced at Claire's at Robinson Mall. The lady named Kim there did it and she did a great job. She said she's been piercing ears since 1994. We did one ear at a time, which worked well for us. My DD has a low pain tolerance and cries at everything, but surprisingly didn't cry.
  • Caileigh just had hers done when she turned 9 - Claires.  We had no problems and she did well.  Get someone that has been doing it for awhile.  We stayed away from Piercing Pagoda b/c a neighbor had a bad experience there
