Looking for a dentist in the South Hills area.

I have to find a dentist in a hurry.  I am VERY afraid of Dentists from some previous issues and I hate my old one.  I have stayed away probably longer than I should of because I am ashamed of my mouth and my fears. So I need a dentist that is gentle and understanding,  I have held off to long and now I need to go now! Please suggest your dentist if you know they are sympathetic to my situation.  Thanks

I don't have any recommendations but wanted to say I've been in your situation before. Finding a good dentist has made all the difference. I No longer have tons of anxiety and go twice a year for cleanings. I wish I could recommend my place but I'm not in the area. I found mine my looking for sedation dentistry myself. I figured a place that offered that would be accustomed to patients with anxiety and fear. They absolutely were. They made me feel comfortable from the get go. I hadnt been to a dentist in years when I went to them. I had to get a bunch of fillings and a crown but they were so understanding and didn't make me feel embarrassed or bad about not having gone in a while. I've only had to take Valium once there...otherwise I've been ok.

Just wanted to give you some encouragement that you can get through it. I had a bad experience as a child and never thought I'd get rid of my anxiety. I don't love getting teeth filled but it's not dreaded anymore (and since I go regularly now i haven't needed much work in a while). Hope you are able to find someone that can help!

  • Hey, there hope this helps:

Richard Dukovich, 4880 Library Rd 412-831-3853.

He has always been great with me, and I was a big wuss when I got my first cavity as an adult.

  • Thanks for the encouraging words.  I am having a hard time with this.  Where did you end up going?  Maybe it is closer than I think.

  • @gwennythepooh  hates the dentist and she goes to the Dental Spa in Robinson and has been super happy with them. It is in the same plaza as Golf Galaxy, by the Eat n Park. She may chime in on this.

  • If you don't mind driving to Robinson - I highly, highly, highly recommend Pittsburgh Dental Spa. I was in the same boat - didn't go for a long time and was scared to death. I ended up with a toothache, so they squeezed me in. They've been nothing but wonderful to work with. I did sedation for my more intensive work (a couple root canals, fillings, wisdom teeth out and a deep cleaning). Since then I've gotten to the point where I can do cleanings with no sedation. They take their time, check with me frequently throughout the cleaning to make sure I'm okay/comfortable and it's a great experience. I even take my almost 4 year old there because they are so gentle. Good luck - actually going is the hardest part!
  • I just wanted to wish you good luck!  I hadn't been to the dentist in years because I was terrified, and also embarrassed because it had been so long since I had gone to the dentist.  I finally ended up going this past Fall because I had chipped a molar.  I'm so glad that I did because it wasn't bad at all and everyone was so nice.  I'm going for a cleaning next week and I'm not even nervous.  It's really a huge weight off of my shoulders.  Gwen is right, actually going is the hardest part!

I'm in NY actually so definitely too far!!

Some things I found to help me was setting up a playlist on my iPod (I have a specific one called dentist!) and have that playing while at the dentist. It helped to not hear the drill as much.

My dentist also has tvs so that is another distraction. So if you think that might help you could always ask when calling around to places. And definitely think about the sedation aspect. I only did Valium...it didn't really sedate me but it calmed my fears we enough that I actually made it to the visit.

Honestly once you start having some good experiences it will get better. A good place should really help you be comfortable and understand how you feel.

    I replied :)
  • I LOVE my dentist, so much so that I haven't lived in the South Hills for the past 8 years but I still make the drive to see her.
