QOTD 3/18

How do you feel about having kids do "community service" as opposed to detention, etc as punishment in school?

  • I think that's a good idea. Detention just inconveniences a lot of people, such as teachers who have to monitor it after school and the kid's parent who has to come get them.

In Ontario kids in high school have to complete a minimum of 40 hours community service to graduate but i think more is always better!

  • I like that it's suppose to match the misbehavior. Food fight - you clean the cafe, etc. I think more kids need to see the consequences to their actions.

  • I think they definitely need a punishment that fits the crime. I don't think it just needs to be "apologizing" when they hurt someone's feelings, but when it's something tangible like making a mess, absolutely. I don't get why people are fussing.

  • This was what our "detention" was at my high school.  I don't see what the big deal is, as long as the kids aren't doing any dangerous tasks.

  • I didn't read the article, but I don't like this being labeled as community service. That should not be something people are forced to do. It shouldn't be a punishment to help others or do the right thing.

Doing jobs for punishment should be on the same level as detention. At least it's constructive and not just making kids sit there and stare at a wall.

  • I didn't read the article, but I agree with giving kids a punishment more than detention.  In my school detention doesn't work at all.  You end up with the same kids every day, so clearly they aren't learning their lesson.

I agree with @Willy1020 that they shouldn't be forced to do community service as a punishment, but they should have to do something.  Help clean the cafeteria, maybe sweep the hallways, some other tedious school task, something that will maybe deter some children from repeating the negative behavior.
