Putting meat on his bones

We found a dog (yea!) that will work stupendously with our cat. The problem is that he was a bit neglected at the Chicago shelter, and his ribs and hip bones can be seen under his skin. How do we fatten this boy up? He needs to gain about 10-20 pounds, according to the foster.

Re: Putting meat on his bones

  • First things first, I would take him in for a wellness exam and parasite check...

I would start by transitioning him from what he is currently eating to a quality kibble. The vet will be able to give you an idea of what to feed, how much to feed, and what his weight should be.

    Good luck!

All of this. Keep an eye out for parasites even if the screening is negative-apparently it's common for them to be missed. This happened to our dog and he put the weight right back on once we treated him.
  • Yes def take him to the vet, if you haven't already done so.  They will give you recommendations on increasing his weight and the best food for him!

  • 1. Vet check.
    2. Slowly change over to higher quality food because it makes a big difference!  We feed Orijen Senior to our older dog and Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream to our younger pup.
    3. Keep an eye out when they poop for additional parasites for the first few weeks.
    4. Add in an extra half serving of food each day for the first few weeks.
    5. Once they get settled start training sessions once a day with treats.

Whatever you do, no people food!!!
