How long did you look?

How long from when you started to look for a house until you closed and moved in?  We are fully anticipating up to 6-12 months.

Re: How long did you look?

  • It really will depend on the market in your area. We searched online for about 6 months to get a feel for what's out there, then worked with a realtor for 3 months, put in an offer, and then closed 3 months after that. There was a lot of inventory in our area and houses were going quickly. We made sure that house hunting was a priority, and looked at as many houses as we could in the time we had available to us. Also, our closing was delayed 5 times before we actually had the keys to our house.

If you can avoid it, don't set a time limit or deadline for yourself. If you're working against a timeline, like an apartment rental, speak with the landlord when you begin your search about their ability to accommodate you in a month-to-month rental, if necessary. Be honest with them, and hopefully they will be willing to help you.
  • House #1 - 6 months
    House #2 - 4 years
  • House 1 maybe 2 months
House 2 Internet research for about 1 month prior to me relocating, went out with realtor day after arriving, bought second house we looked at.
  • We (mainly I) looked online for a few months before officially house hunting to see what was out there, how much we could get for our money and how long homes were staying on the market.

We officially hunted for 2 weeks before going under contract and we closed 4 weeks after that.

  • We started browsing online and seriously talking about our must haves about four months before looking. Once we started we put an offer on the first house we saw and had an on-time 45 day close.
  • We looked online to get an idea about what we could get for our money and what  we wanted for about 6 months.  Our house was the second we saw in person.  We only saw 3 and that was all in one day.  We made an offer the next day.  When you know, you know.
  • Looked for 2 years, closed 3 months after going under contract.
