Contractor recommendations and/or powder room reno estimates

We're looking at a 2 year timeline to move out of our house, so we're trying to focus on one project at a time. We HAVE TO renovate the downstairs powder room. It's going to need a new floor (currently it's carpet - so, so nasty), a new sink, and possibly a new toilet. Anyone have a good contractor recommendation and/or has anyone done this recently and have an idea of cost? I'm not looking for it to be high end - just nice enough that it will help sell the house.

Re: Contractor recommendations and/or powder room reno estimates

  • We used Joe Zizza and Knechtel Plumbing to redo our entire main bathroom (the size of a powder room then big enough for a tub). Joe did the floor and walls (we had to knock the walls down and put up new drywall). Plumbing did the toilet, vanity (and tub). I would call one of them and see what they say. They work together (Joe's wife is the secretary for the plumbing group). I don't have their numbers handy at the moment though. Between the two it cost us $5300 (including the cost of the tub, not including the cost of the faucets, toilet, vanity, flooring, light fixture, mirror).

  • We replaced the floor from linoleum to tile in our upstairs bathroom, and replaced the toilet and vanity in our downstairs powder room.

    We (Rich) did it ourselves as it was just as simple as replacing those items, so no real plumbing or construction needed to be done.  It was a while ago so I'm probably not that helpful on cost, but from what I recall, our toilet and vanity were around $150-$200 each.  I can't remember how much the tile was, but our upstairs bathroom is a large L shaped room, and I don't remember it being more than a couple hundred dollars (including grout, etc.).  If your job is just a cosmetic update, you could definitely do it on your own for a reasonable price.

    For all of our jobs that we don't do ourselves, we use a family friend, Matt Casella at MAJIC Painting.  I'm not sure where his pricing sits, but he is reliable and does neat/thorough work.

  • I do NOT recommend http://www.greenmechanical.us/ for plumbing.  They were the only Allegheny county licensed plumbers our builder had and they were a nightmare to work with.  Never showing up when they were scheduled (putting our build months behind); failing to hook up a line in our master bath and flooding our bedroom and the kitchen/dining room below;

  • The materials aren't really that much depending on what you choose. My mom called one of those Handyman Services to replace a vanity in their condo. She bought the vanity and faucet and they hooked it up. She paid him for the day and it was a few hundred dollars(she had him do some other odd jobs while he was there too). Toilets and vanities are pretty simple, you may not even need a plumber if you are only replacing them, a small job handyman might be a cheaper option since it will probably be a one or two day job.
