Kitchen Decorating???

Hello all,
My future hubby and I have bought our first home together and the over all theme of the house is chic beach. My kitchen is the only room not quite fitting in. I love the 50's and cupcakes. How can I turn my kitchen into a retro cupcake diner with a beach feel to it? Is it possible? Please help us out!! Thanks in advance!

Re: Kitchen Decorating???

  • Those two things don't really mesh at all.  Retro dinners were all about color and metal everywhere.  Beach feel is about neutrals and more natural materials.  You don't have to make a single room incorporate every like and dislike.

Are you planning to do major remodels, or just looking to accessorize?
  • @BlueBirdMB: Just doing over all decorating. So it wouldn't be bad to have the kitchen different from all over rooms?
  • It's not bad to have your kitchen a different style than the other rooms, especially if it's not an open concept kitchen.  Just have the room be consistent and coordinated.

Kitchen decorating should be pretty minimal in my opinion.  I think you can decorate your eating space if you have one and then accessorize a little in the main kitchen.  When people start adding knick knacks about the cabinets and wall paper boarders, I think it gets overwhelming and dated.

    In our kitchen we:
    changed the cabinet hardware
    changed the island lighting
added a yellow basket on the island
added a yellow watering can on the counter
added a yellow dish towel on the oven door
    changed the appliances

In the eating area of the kitchen we have:
a yellow basket on the table
    yellow and blue chairs
a neutral colored chest of draws that we've repurposed into a side board
hung white boxes on the wall above the side board and inside the boxes we placed cheap tea cups that I painted yellow

  • @BlueBirdMB: Thank you for replying to me! This has helped me see that adding lots of things in a kitchen space can be overwhelming. Thank you again. Your kitchen sounds amazing!!
