Re: QOTD 4/15

  • Ugh...this is a touchy subject...

DH calls my mom by her first name. My mom told him to and she wouldn't have it any other way. H feels like it's disrespectful (see below), but my mom has told him over and over again that it's absolutely fine.

I try to avoid calling his parents anything. They want to be called mom and dad, I refuse to call anyone but my own mother mom and I'm never going to call anyone dad. I've tried calling them by their first names, but they flipped out! They keep pushing the mom and dad (insert last name), sorry it's just not going to happen.

  • We both call each others parents by their first names.  Both our families are pretty laid back and we've always called them by their names from the first time we were introduced.

  • Jeff called them first names, sometimes mom and dad.  We joke dad is more like his dad since they are both from NC, etc.  We also see my parents daily.

I do the same, usually first name, sometimes mom but it's weird.  I think it's because we don't see her as often.

  • Also, now we have a kid, we usually call them Mommom, Pappaw and Nanny... makes it easier.

DH calls my parents by their first names.

DH's mom would probably like if I called her mom but that's too weird for me because I already have a mom.  I call her by her first name.  Never met H's dad and they are estranged, so don't have to call him anything.

Funny story, the guy I dated before H was the son of the principal at my hs, so even though I called his mom by her first name I could NEVER call his dad anything but Mr. (his last name).  And we dated for 6 years!

  • H has historically avoided calling my father by his first name, but is getting better. He'll do first name or Dad K at times when he has to. He has no trouble calling my step-mom and grandpa by their first names.

My mother is deceased, so I call my MIL "Mom" now. I'm happy to do so, but like @brainybrunette, I still have my dad so I call H's father by his first name. If my mom was still alive, I would likely call my MIL by her first name.

Before we were married, I called them Mr & Mrs and H did the same for my dad.
  • I call DH's parents by their first names, sporadically Mom or Dad. But we were together 8 years before getting married so I'm just used to their first names.

DH calls my parents Mom and Pop. He didn't call them anything before we were married.

  • I call my dad by his first name or Dad.  My stepmom is sometimes by first name sometimes Mom and sometimes Mama Duck, (because our mutual friends called me Chickie).  I call DH's mom by her first name or mom.

DH calls my parents by their first name.

  • We both use first names for each others parents. Once we've got kids, I'm sure we'll move to grandparent names some.

  • We each call our parents by their first names.  When O is around, we call them grandma/grandpa so she learns their names.
  • I think we each call our respective parents mom and dad. I don't know if I've ever paid attention as to what H calls my parents. I'm iffy on the subject when it comes to his parents. I had to get his mom's attention while we were on vacation last summer and it weirded me out calling her by her first name. I just felt so informal.
