Life Update

So the main thing I'm wanting to update on started back in January. I started having some major stabbing pains in both of my feet. It was manageable at first, but just kept getting worse. I made an appt with a foot doctor, which was 3 weeks away. It started getting worse and I ended up going to a different foot doctor who could fit me in sooner. She suggested it was the weight machines I was using and told me to stop and come back in a month. Well I didn't like that answer, so I kept the other appointment and went.

Doctor number two suggested nerve issues and put me on a nerve pain medication. He also referred me to a spine doctor to make sure there wasn't something there causing nerve issues. When x-rays showed no problem, he sent me for a nerve conduction study. I had this done and it showed that my lateral plantar nerve was unresponsive and my medial plantar nerve was delayed. These indicate tarsal tunnel syndrome. They also upped my pain medication.

Yesterday I went for a follow-up with my foot doctor. The medication I'm on is a class C drug, which means it isn't guaranteed safe during pregnancy, they don't really know how it will impact the fetus. He doesn't like the idea of me taking it while pregnant and said that the weight gain from pregnancy would most likely make the pain worse because it would increase the compression on those nerves. He wants to do surgery. These would be two separate surgeries, 2 weeks non-weight bearing, and at least 1 month in a boot. The surgery would release the tendon that is compressing the nerves.

I don't know what to do, I'm bringing H and doing the surgical consult on May 4th and getting a 2nd opinion on the 5th. My aunt is very holistic and does a branch of massage therapy called ortho-bionomy and has tried to put me in touch with someone who does it locally to try and fix it without surgery. I am fine with having surgery if that's truly what's best for me, but it's not guaranteed to work and it's putting off my plans for baby for almost another whole year. I'm so brokenhearted over that fact.

Sorry this got so long. Cookies to everyone who finished! Love you ladies!

Re: Life Update

  • I am sorry that you have to have 2 surgeries and it will push back TTC, but I hope it helps the problem. Can you try physical therapy in the meantime?
  • First off, I'm glad the second doctor has been able to detect what the issue is and he's putting a plan in place for you to correct it.  I'm sorry that it may delay you guys starting a family, but you have to look at the whole picture.  You don't want to be a new mommy and dealing with something that is impacting your quality of life.  Hopefully you can get this taken care of without the surgery and the massage therapy works for you.  Hang in there!  ((hugs))

  • I am sorry that you are going through this.  I am glad that you went for a second opinion.  I think that it is better to get your feet treated before having kids that way you don't have to worry so much about it after.  Keep us posted on how the appointments go.

Hugs and a chocolate milkshake with salty fries.  :)

  • I'm sorry this is something you are dealing with right now. Putting off TTC is hard, but if this will help make carrying a baby easier on you, it is definitely worth it.

  • I'm so sorry, that sounds terrible. As much as non-weight bearing totally sucks (I recommend the knee scooter I used for this), it would suck a lot more with babies around. I don't know what H and I would have done if we had kids during that month I was non-weight bearing. I agree with the comments above that it's probably better to take care of this now. Again, I'm so sorry....sending love and hugs!

  • Sorry you are going through this, I know how disappointed you must be :(  I agree with the other girls though that it's better to deal with it up front and TTC when you know you'll be able to move around pain-free.  Hugs to you!!! <3

  • Thanks ladies. I'm hopefully going next week for a 2nd opinion. I know it's smart to take care of myself before having baby, I am just so upset that it happened right as we were getting ready to try. Why couldn't this have come up months ago?

  • I'm a firm believer everything happens for a reason.  I hope there's another option that doesn't put off TTC as long.
