Train tickets to/from London and Southampton?

We leave in 9 days for a three week trip that includes a 7 night cruise to Norway out of Southampton, England.  We travel to London the night before (the Eurostar from Paris, tickets that have already been booked) and are staying near the St. Pancras station.  The next morning we have to get ourselves down to Southampton, which I'm under the assumption is about a 1.5 hour train ride away (with one stop between).  I'd like to go ahead and book the train tickets now, but H thinks it will be better to wait until the day of.  For those of you who've visited the UK, what would you do?  (@Hoffse, I'm tagging you because I know you've been to London)  Thanks in advance!!

Our Norway cruise also left from Southampton. I was pretty sure we just bought our tickets at the station, and I just checked my email to confirm that. And it brought up the CruiseCritic review that I wrote for the trip!

Here is the info on the train:

We had a few days in London beforehand, so we stopped by Waterloo Station the day before to get the train schedule and bought our tickets then.  The one-way trip cost £28 each.  We had considered getting someone in the UK to buy discounted Megatrain tickets for us, but we didn't finalize our pre-cruise plans until quite late.  We traveled on Monday morning, and the train wasn't very crowded, so we had no problem finding space for all of our luggage.  The wait for a taxi at the station was about 5 minutes, and the fare to the ship came to £7.80.
