The Butler (book, movie, whatever. No spoilers, I don't think)
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I think it might be ready for me to pick up from the library, so I'll probably watch it this week. I didn't realize it was also a book, though. I didn't know anything at all about the story before I picked up the audiobook, actually. Have you guys seen the movie? Was it as good as the hype?
But holy crap, this dude was a White House butler through 8 presidents!? I can't even imagine the shit he must've seen and heard. What an amazing life.
So the book . . . it was only 2 discs, so about 2 hours long, and the first part was Eugene Allen's story, as told by the Washington Post journalist who wrote the article that led to the movie in the first place. The second was sort of a brief history of black Hollywood, and the story behind getting the movie made. The first part was so, so stunning to me. I'm blown away that this person existed, that this one individual was a witness to SO MUCH HISTORY. He was like real life Forrest Gump. The second part was sort of a couple of essays that made the whole idea of this book feel thrown together in an effort to further cash in on the film's success. The essays were interesting, and mostly well-written, but sometimes it felt like they consisted of just a list of famous people's names. I'm really looking forward to the movie, because even though it's a fictionalized account of Gene Allen's life, I have a feeling it will be so much richer and better than this book was. This was worth listening to for the fist disc, but I wouldn't fault anyone for skipping the second.
