Has anyone been to San Diego?  Brian and I are going in June...I have a conference for work and his company has a satellite office there, so he's tagging along with me and working from that office while I'm at the conference.  We are flying there Saturday, so we'll have Saturday afternoon, all day Sunday and a few evenings there.  Any recommendations for places to see/eat?

Side note-this is our first time away from the kids together.  Ever.  I'm nervous and excited. Words of reassurance are also welcome.  My in laws are staying at my house with the boys, so I know they will be fine and have a great time, but for some reason, I feel very anxious about it.
:-S

I'm also nervous that I will have to listen to Brian quote Anchorman for 5 days straight.

Re: San Diego?

  • San Diego - you know it was discovered by the Germans in 1904 ;) (sorry couldn't resist!!!!)

No advice as I haven't been out there, just wanted to wish you luck!!!

I've never been, but have a great time!    We went away for our anniversary a few years ago without the kids and while I was nervous, it was really nice.   Going out to dinner without helping anyone eat buy yourself.   Waking on your own schedule.  Just enjoying touristy places without making sure you have snacks, first aid supplies, etc, etc.   You'll be fine, they'll be fine.  And everyone will come home all refreshed and appreciating each other a little more.

I haven't been, but it's been on my list of places to visit forever.

Steve and I do a long weekend away without the kids every year (just got back from this year's trip Monday night) and it's wonderful. Usually I'm ready to get back after 4-5 days away, but I love every minute we have some time to do things that we used to love to do, but don't that often.

This trip we did a two hour hike and tons of walking, which we used to do all the time, but don't anymore because the kids start complaining after 30-45 minutes. We went to nice restaurants, laid by the pool and relaxed, etc.

Enjoy your time to sightsee and go out without any restrictions.

  • Haven't been so no recs! But I will give you reassurance about the kids! Go and have fun and enjoy!! My parents took dd for a week when she was 3 or 4... I was nervous but it was nice to have the time! They took her again the next summer. We've also done a couple overnight trips without her. can you guys Skype? That might be good to have set up and ready for the in laws. The kids might do better if they know they can "see" you.

I don't think we've been away on a trip without the kids yet (I feel like we have, but can't think of where we would have went - oh, to be in my 20's and have a decent memory again, lol!), but our kids have had plenty of grandparent weekend sleep overs, and it is amazing to just be and do stuff without any responsibility other than to have fun with your husband.

Emmy, also, your boys are the same ages as mine. If they're anything like mine, they'll be so excited about being with their grandparents they won't even ask about you.

J didn't ask once, and Michael only wanted mama because he got sick with a stomach bug. They didn't even want to talk to me on the phone.

    They loved their grandma/pappy time.

  • Lisa-I think that's how it's going to be!  Jake will be out of school by then, so I'm sure it will be a few days filled with fun and being spoiled...exactly as it should be! :)  My MIL has an ipad, I should remind her to bring it so that we can facetime with them.

thanks for the reassurance, ladies :)  I'm sure it will be fine and once I'm there enjoying myself without being interrupted and harassed for snacks, I will be just fine, too! :)

  • John & I went years ago, I also had a conference and we stayed at the Marriott at the marina.  Either there or Hyatt on water.  Both are so gorgeous. We loved it.  We rented a convertible and drove up the coast to La Jolla & played golf.  Also drove over to Hotel Del Coronado (famous) and walked on beach.  I think we had another tour through my conference but can't remember what it was.  We also went in Feb so weather good but not great.  Gaslamp district is fun, also zoo if you are into that.  Its gorgeous so just enjoy the water, weather & sites!

As for being away from kids, I'm sure you will have everything ready to go so remember most of the time you would be at work so face time them at night and have fun! They'll be in good hands!

Kris, I'm all about a once a year getaway, but prior to a year, I couldn't imagine it. Though I was nursing and the idea of doing that much pumping for a trip was just too much for me.

Well, she isn't BF. She quit at 4 or 5 months. They were already supplementing and with her travel schedule for work, it worked better for them.

The kicker is that he totally slept from 8-7 every day for my parents and since they got home he hasn't slept through the night. They want to know my parents secret!

  • We were there 7 years ago this week (thank you, timehop!) and it's awesome. It was part of a week long California trip, so I think we only spent 2 days in SD itself. We did the zoo (definitely worth a stop - they have pandas and koalas) and sea world (Meh. I have big sea world objections after blackfish, so I would probably skip it). We stopped by the beach and the gas lamp district. We were also young and poor, so I don't have great restaurant suggestions. Lol!

  • Confession: I was trying to talk Brian into driving to Beverly Hills one night so that we could go to Lisa Vanderpump's restaurant.  For some reason, he didn't go along with my plan to "stalk housewives" (his words, not mine)
