minipill anyone?

I recently switched from regular pills to the mini pill because of my blood pressure; I took the regular pill all of these years even with the potential side effects because of my hypertension, but my gyno really urged me at my last appointment to switch (now that I'm pushing 35 years old!) I switched to the mini pill and it is driving me crazy.  I was on it while breastfeeding, but never got a period until after I weaned both boys, so it didn't bother me. But this time around, I'm all over the place....long periods, periods in between my usual periods.....terribly irritable and emotional.  It's rough.  But, I'm only halfway through my 2nd pack, so I feel like I should give it more time but I'm not sure how much longer I can tolerate feeling crazy.  Just wanted to see if anyone else has been on it and if so, did these problems subside after some time?

Re: minipill anyone?

  • I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with it.  When I was on it, I found out that I had to take it at the exact same time (down to the minute) every day, or I would have spotting and other issues.  Maybe your body is just adjusting to the different hormones?

  • I was on it briefly between pregnancies. I do remember that I had a harder time tracking periods (there didn't seem to be a definitive pattern). I don't remember much on the emotional aspect, but do agree that the remembering to take it at exactly the same time daily drove.me.bonkers. Good luck - I hope that it improves for you!!!
  • I was only on it for a year between kids, and I was nursing at the time, so there was no way to tell which hormones were in charge. ;-)

Maybe call the nurse at your gyn's office and ask how long it should take to adjust and if there is anything you can do to improve your situation. 6 weeks is a long time to feel that crappy.

I wasn't put on the mini pill but after Julia a different BCP that caused me to spot for what seemed like months. I would call the office and they told me it would take my body a few months to regulate. Great. There was no pattern to the breakthrough bleeding. ugh. And after a few months it did go away for the most part. I also only get a period every couple months now. Hopefully you get a quick resolution. :( The joys of womanhood. Ha.
  • Thanks for all of the feedback....I'm going to give it another month or so (mainly because I have one more pack of pills!) and go from there.
